It strikes me that there are some outstanding musicians out there who really deserve a bigger audience. Popularity relies on such a combination of fashion, business support, media coverage, endorsement, money and luck that many very skilled artists languish in obscurity while others with only 1% of the talent rake in the £millions.

So who do we know who really should be famous but have not (yet) made it?

Here is my nomination.

Samantha Fish, with songs showing an amazing range of singing, songwriting and guitar playing ability.

I've always thought that Jess Greenberg deserves more exposure...

It's sort of related, but I was reading an old issue of "Total Guitar" magazine earlier (I learned to play the guitar from reading magazines, and I've still got them all - including the first one I bought which was a "Guitar World" Led Zep special edition).

Anyway, the TG issue I was reading was from 1994, and it included a review of the debut album of Nick Harper (son of Roy Harper, a musician who - during the 1960's and 70's - seemed to get involved with many famous groups including Zep). The review was glowing, and the CD that came with the magazine included two tracks off Nick's album. They were, admittedly, deeply impressive and TG said, 'If there is any justice in the world, Nick should be a huge star'.

A quick search shows he's now playing his old stuff in small clubs. For example:-

Brilliant, first made aware of this band when they had Lalah Hathaway's singing on the Brenda Russell penned track Something.

His gigs are brilliant - lots of banter with the audience, along with some outstanding guitar playing (including his trademark "change the snapped string during the song without pausing")
Well worth going to see.

I'm pleased about that, as he's still a very talented guitarist.

I've seen Nick play almost as often as I've seen Roy. Not seen either in ages though, really should get to another gig, always a great night.

Matt Corby - fills the hole in my life since Jeff Buckley died. Amazing voice, plays every instrument going, writes all his own stuff, eye-wateringly good looking... I don't understand how hes not more well known:

I'm biased, as this is a friend's son. He writes his own songs, and plays ALL the instruments!!!

A lot of his stuff isn't really my cup of tea, being 30 years over target market, But this is rather good.

Fair play, that's pretty good

Like you, it's not really my "thing" but I can appreciate there's some talented musicianship going on there
