Blimey... mate of mine has a signed George Harrison Strat. (with impeccable provenance - and when I mean impeccable, Olivia Harrison, George's wife, gave it to him). Bet that's worth a bob or two. More than Gilmore's that's for sure.

Wow - it sold for 4m USD in 2019.

Funny but dull story - I registered for the 2019 auction thinking I might get lucky and snipe a bit of a Gilmour bargain. The estimate prices were all crazy low. When you register for an auction they credit check you and give you a bid limit. I have no idea how they came up with mine which was 60K sterling. I was thinking maybe 6k would be my spend limit hehe Anyway first guitar up for auction was his white strat, used to record bit of the Wall and the opening bid was 75K. That's me told then biggrin

I remember back in the early 90s being interested in a 1950's stratocaster, and being lined up with someone acting for a then undisclosed celebrity musician who was very poorly and looking to offload some of his instruments. Sadly it never went anywhere and I bought a then brand new Strat Ultra.

I still have it, and its funny to think that guitar is now relatively older than the pre-CBS strat I was after at the time. Where did that time go...

It's one of those guitars though, isn't it? Used to record iconic tunes by a player who is a guitar hero for many (me included).

I'd imagine big bucks would be paid for others like:-

Clapton's "Blackie" Strat
Gibbons' "Pearly Gates" Les Paul
SRV's "#1" Strat
EVH's "Frankenstrat"
Willie Nelson's "Trigger"

I believe Kirk Hammett recently bought the ex-Peter Green / Gary Moore Les Paul, which I imagine would have been $5 mil +

He's had it since 2014. He says he didn't even pay half a million for it. (I appreciate that's still a helluva lotta cash).

Him saying it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXdh1Tck9nU&t=...

I think the frankenstrat and red special are probably the most valuable as they are relatively unique compared to a strat or les Paul .

A guitar signed by George Harrison, fair enough, but Gilmour's Strat has provenance in that it was used during Floyd's golden period.

When I used to work in the far east my agent that we used was very good friends with the guy who did all the buying for Hard Rock Cafe , his job was going to these actions and buying all the stuff you see on the walls .qQuite a job to have.
‘What you up today dear ‘ oh I’m buying Kieth Richards guitar used on sticky fingers and some of John bonhams drumsticks .’

I've got a (Squire) Strat that looks just like Gilmours, bought back in the 80s biggrin

In fact it's the exact model that the lead guitarist and vocalist of It Bites used to play smile

A friend was keen to to bag a guitar at the Mark Knopfler gear auction. He had what he thought was a decent £30k to spend, was sad to find there was practically nothing in reach!

"The Beatles are the most recognised band in history, with over 600 million records sold. Pink Floyd is also immensely popular, with 169.6 million studio albums sold"

I rest my case. smile

But was the Harrison guitar just a guitar he used once or twice, or does it have special relevance in Beatles history?

The Black Strat can be seen played by Gilmour at many live shows, plus its 'voice' on seminal Floyd recordings. Its not just a strat either, its been modded and fettled.

Its of massively more value surely than a random strat once owned by George Harrison. Were it 'Rocky' that would be a different matter!

I would say approaching £20m

Wonder how much Brian May's home made "Red special" would fetch, made out of bits of old wood?

A few of Harrison's guitars, including the Telecaster he played on the rooftop concert and the cherry SG he played on Rain and Paperback Writer barely reached a million dollars each, although that was in back in 2004.

I think the Floyd fanbase and serious guitar collectors venerate Gilmore's guitars and are willing
to spend the big money to attain them,

This is it - if I had huge amounts of cash would I be interested in buying Dave Gilmour's strat? Absolutely. Fantastic guitar player.
I'd be struggling to name a great guitar solo by George Harrison, and that isn't to denigrate his playing as he was obviously a very important part of The Beatles.

Had a conversation with my Dad over the weekend about whether as time goes by, would this guitar be worth more?

Bit like how older classic cars are losing their audience as the target market dies off & the younger market aren’t interested.

We came to the conclusion that they’ll always be collectors for musical history like this so would appreciate even more.
