the problem with these sort of threads is what constitutes being underrated, it's pretty subjective.

I could comment that, to my mind, at least 50% of the singers mentioned above were actually rated highly at the time but, hey ho.

It also implies there is an objective, correct rating against which to judge them, which is obviously not true. I don’t like U2, but they’re immensely popular. Does that make them overrated? According to whom? Some people will still say they’re underrated.

Anyway, my answer is Sandy Denny.

I suppose it is open to interpretation about what you mean by underrated:

Siouxsie Sioux
Liz Fraser
Mrs John Murphy (Kim Deal)
Shirley Manson - I remember when she played the keyboards in Goodbye Mr McKenzie - hasn't she done well - but not your trad female singer - whatever that might be.

Good list. Would probably add Kim Gordon, but not an obvious singer.

Eddie Reader - everyone thinks of Fairground Attraction but she is stalwart of the UK folk scene and very underrated.

Pauline Black - never really got the recognition she deserved, along with Poly Styrene and Ari Up/ Viv Albertine of the Slits

As above, Jennifer Warnes - her album of Leonard Cohen songs (Famous Blue Raincoat) is superb.

Clare Grogan - never quite lived up to her potential but back in the day had a great, quirky voice.

Belinda Carlisle - everyone knows the poppy stuff but they never quite realise how important a band the Go Go's were.
