I am currently experiencing quite high airbox temps it seems, with the air-temp at the throttle blades measuring around 70 degrees, despite the fact that under the clip when moving is around 45 degrees.
The airbox I have is from GD but since it is sat above the engine, I am wondering if it is accumulating all that heat from the surroundings over time...
I decided yesterday to add heat barrier to the underneath of the airbox, but wondering what else I should do - like wrap the U tube???.
The exhausts are zircoteced, but now I am thinking if proper heat-wrap should be added to the entire headers and pipes...
Water temp seems to be OK (measured from the head side-port sensor) and the fans seem to keep this down even in traffic at around 90 degrees.
Ideas why so high, and solutions?

How well sealed is you intake, I mean with respect to the outside? Could you be pulling in air from the engine bay rather than the top scoop openning. That might explain high intake temps if your problem is when driving or at idle.
My air box is made of ally, and really used to heat soak after a run, park up and ten mins later was hot-hot-hot. I covered it with the ally-glass fibre cloth type of insulation and it did make a big different, although doesn't look as good.

That is what I need to do, find something to seal the airbox inlet area - Guess some hot air is getting betwix inlet on the box and clip inlet.. Quite surprised how hot that air in the box gets though...
What's best? High density foam, or something else? Still recon the clip could use some bigger holes to let the heat out.... Where's my jig-saw....!!!!!
Think some have made the box top part of the clip, is that right?

In the two pictures above you can see a solution to your problem the rubber completely seals the inlet to the bonnet. Temps previous to the airbox where not as high as you are getting, measured by my Motec ECU.The temps run close to outside air temp with the box and gold foil on a 100 Fahrenheit day. Lee

I have a cast inlet manifold and would like to change to composite for this reason.
Inlet temps are an issue for me.
I am considering charge cooling but have doubts about the efficiency of such a system on an Ultima,
At first it seems a no brainer, heat transfer across a cold matrix but the efficiency of the system would be measured across two heat exchangers v's one in an intercooled set-up.

which is then a huge amount of air that is passing by the alloy - I can hardly believe that this fast flowing air can be heated up much unless already heated up by exhaust or engine.

Exactly - you could well be measuring heat soak in the sensor itself.which is then a huge amount of air that is passing by the alloy - I can hardly believe that this fast flowing air can be heated up much unless already heated up by exhaust or engine.
