To all you aeroscreen'd Can Am drivers out there...... both of you ;-)

Is anyone else annoyed by the light distortion due to the kick-up of the top edge of the aeroscreen? For the most part, I'm looking over the top of it so it's not generally an issue, but when going up hill, or manoeuvring the car in tight spaces, I have to look down through the screen where the kick-up distorts everything frown

I don't think it's going to be possible to take the kick-up out of the screen without heating it gently over a form, so I'm left thinking that if it could be trimmed down a couple of inches, it'd get rid of the kick-up & distortion.

Has anyone tried this?? The car is so serene & calm inside, that I'm not worried about losing some height from the screen, but I am worried about breaking it, so I need a specialist plastics company to tackle the job. Any ideas? Thanks smile

I would suspect that the reason it is serene and calm in the cabin is because of the kick up...

Mind you, have a look at the Lotus aeronautical screen first used on Jim Clark's Lotus 25 in 1962/3. that would get the whole screen lower for the same effect...

a little closer look at the frame which is done in carbon. We will cover what you see here with a finish layer of carbon for aesthetics. Lee

I like that screen, Lee. I think having something made from scratch is another (costly) option, as you've done. I just need to find a good plastics company, here in the UK.....

I'm not worried about a lack of height adding a bit more turbulence, it'll never be as blustery as my Atom and a bit more air movement would actually be quite welcome ;-)

High flyer: Thanks, the interior space is bigger than you might think. First of all there are no seats, the floor has a custom molded insert that is upholstered so you sit very low in the car. Not the typical 27 ford or Cobra where the side of the car comes to 5 inches below your shoulder. The other thing we did was we put a blister on the left side foot well, think of it as a Gurney bump for your left foot. This allows your left foot to sit comfortably albeit tightly to the left of the clutch. As far as the window goes the majority of the labor is in the mold.
I built the initial mold. Start with a drawing, build the shape out of foam, craft shops have what you are after, get the shape as close as possible. Then apply a layer of bondo to the foam sand this to the shape. Then paint the mold with high build paint and sand to shape and a 1500 grit finish. Then let the plastic people go from there, remember that its a mold and the finished piece needs to pull away from the mold without interference, no sharp bends etc. Lee

Hi Mark

If you are still looking for someone to cut down your aeroscreen and re-polish the top edge, then that is something I could do for you. I modified my own sidescreens on my Can-Am. I make and modify motorsport windscreens and sidescreens as part of my job looking after classic racing cars. Let my know if I can help?

Any pics of your modification on the Can-Am? I have the lower ones (not yet fitted though...).

Would it be good to try sticking your head out of a car window at 120 mph and see what it's like. Especially in the rain! Won't cutting the screen deflector edge off have the same effect?

Can-Am drivers never get above 70 so no problem there...

With the areoscreen, most of your head is already above the screen in the airflow, so losing a few inches off the top of it won't make much difference and getting rid of the annoying deformation is a priority.

Because your head is above the screen, you already get wind / rain in your face as it is, so it's not going to make much difference there.
