I have just watched Marc Lieb's 6.57 min lap of the Ring in the Porsche 918 Spider.

Man, that car is fast and so is Marc. It also shows how supercars have moved on in the last 15 years. The "hairy chested men" out there that say they only want to drive a stick shift need to watch the vid (Pistonheads Home Page). It seems that we are heading for gearboxes with more and more ratios as big torque = big emissions/fuel consumption, so not good in the current eco world.

The point of this post is to find out the fastest an Ultima has lapped the ring.

As I suspect that none of the pilots have been "Ring Meisters(sp?)" I am not expecting to get close to 7 mins, but what is the fastest non beer created speed anyone has achieved?

Wasn't the Factory driving there a couple of years until rain stopped play? Don't know if they registered a practice lap in dry conditions though...

Are you planning a trip there, Paul?

Things certainly have changed in 15 years. Better tyres, gearboxes, and engine management computers have made a big difference.

Sadly there seems to be a lack of Ultima fast 'Ring times with videos. Too much polishing and not enough racing, maybe.

A good mate of mine is a bit of a Ring specialist , he has managed a 8.07 in his 500 bhp Noble , he recons sub 8min is possible with a bit more power but no way sub 7 .

Not planning a trip at the moment, no.

To get an Ultima round the Ring in a decent time you would need to employ a Ring expert and very few, if any owners would want to risk their car in someone else's hands, especially on such a notorious track.

Today's top flight supercars have moved the game on by some margin. The use of F1 technology, aerodynamics as well as carbon composite tubs with the associated rigidity. The Ultima is a race car inspired road car which 15 years ago was a rare thing. Now the Supercar manufacturers are making them too, at super money but with trick electronics controlling everything.
The problem is these electronics are extremely difficult to "crack" for the home builder or small companies.

I would love to see the Factory 720 driven by a Ring expert just to see where it stands. I suspect we will just have to watch the P1 and La Ferrari go round the TG track and compare the time to the one's set by the Factory.

A friend with a 420bhp Noble 3R did a 8min 20sec this year , with a fair bit of traffic plus a slow down at one corner due to an accident, so sub 8 mins is possible.

Sub 7 though.......different world

Yes, very true, but a lot of the carbon fibre advantages have been lost through the safety aspects, and so even the most advanced/expensive sports cars are still heavier than the older ones. Power to weight is very important.
The electronics are also getting well within reach of the low-budget amateur, these days. That is a lot more involved to develop though.

I'm going to be there next year as often as possible (or if I'm unlucky, maybe just once). Older technology, if set up and driven well, can still be good.

Factory state on their web site they were on target for a sub 7 lap from public day testing.

Public day Bridge to gantry (obviously)

Record attempt estimate full lap closed course.

I doubt they will go now, they had the chance to take (in theory at least) 15 seconds or so off the then current record.
With the 918 record Marc lieb reckons it can go even quicker!!
