For those of you who have owned/own one; what made you choose the kit over a supercar?

The reason I'm asking is just having a browse at some used kits (as you do when there's nothing better to do) and one kit stated over £75k was put in.

You could buy say a new Nissan GTR with that kind of money or a used Ferrari/Lamborghini etc.

So what made you choose the kit over a supercar?

Although upon writing this i did also notice a similar thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... but I'm still asking hehe

For some it is creating your car from a pile of (beautifully wrapped) parts.

When you get to a high hp Ultima you will find virtually nothing on the road that is faster.

The Ultima will be way cheaper to run - you service it yourself, insurance is a few hundred rather than thousands, Tax is couple of hundred rather than nearly five.

They get a great deal of positive reactions on the road and park a Ferrari and an Ultima side by side and the Ultima will get more attention as few people will have seen one in the flesh.

You have got to really want one and will probably take longer to sell if you want to.

Some owners have both as each has it's place.

For me it was an itch I had to scratch, I'm into my third year of ownership (which is a record for me).
In recent years I have had a Porsche Turbo, kept it for 18 months, a noble M400, had it just over a year but would have kept it longer(insurance write off) a Ferrari F430 kept for 8 months, lotus Exige S/C 240 kept for 16 months, Elise Turbo 3 months (this was HARD CORE lose your license territory) it had to go or I would have died.
Of all of these cars the Turbo Elise and the Ultima (supercharged) were outright power houses the Ultima is capable of 10 a second quarter mile without doubt.
The Elise Turbo was stupidly fast over 430 RWHP and 730 Kilos.
I like the Ultima because it is easy to work on and If I fancy a power hike it is easily achieved.
For me the Ultima IS a supercar.

Interesting responses. I'm in a similar boat whereby if I had the money I would most likely choose it over a supercar but I've no idea why. Probably the rarity side to it

1st Ultima was a Can-Am then a GTR got bored sold them, bought another GTR got bored sold that now bored again so selling but every time I sold I looked around to better the Ult but for looks, ease to service yourself, blistering performance and the grin it gives me every time I open the garage doors and know an adventure is about to begin I dont know of anything else out there.
Now going rotor so in the air instead of on the ground, hope I don't get bored of this too soon.

Drive a 1700kg Nissan GTR with a 550bhp V6 engine ... then drive a 1000kg Ultima GTR with a mid engined 700+bhp V8.

The Ultima has no gizmos, no ps3 interior, no 4wd, no traction control, no abs and no powered steering (or certainly mine hasn't!) ... stripped back to the car and driver being connected to the road in the purist way.

No contest - especially at the price. And you don't pay a £1000 Car tax premium on a new Ultima smile

When I went from a 450bhp EVO7 4wd monster to a lightweight track car, I suddenly realised, after several spins, that these supercar jap fire crackers make you go from a zero to a hero in a blink of an eye - a great hoot on a wet track - but teach you absolutely nothing about driving!

a Datsun?? hahahha there is no comparison.

depends if you want a car that looks bland, goes very well but all the electronics control the car and you soon get bored.

Or a mega fast car that's faster than most Ferrari lambo etc etc, with no abs, brake servo, traction control that is like a 600hp gocart everyone looks at as you drive down the street.
oh and as some has said, £400 to insure, £100 to service and makes you feel one of a kind as most cars are different.

I had the same delema, nearly bought a 996 turbo but decided, id get a grin factor just opening the garage doors, and it would be a special car , rather than the Porsche, id have driven every day and lost a fortune.

Much cheaper than a Datsun smile ... But you can enjoy it on track without insurance - you just have to be careful!

I went from evo7 £1250 to track car £325 including trackday insurance for something twice expensive

A number of reasons.....
1. Iearning how stuff works Building something is a great way of learning new skills. I only intend to build 1 car so it might as well be extreme.
2. The obvious reasons of build when you can afford. Very few people have a spare £100.000 laying around.
3. The factory support is awesome. Prob the best around. I can't stress this enough!
4. Never liked Ferrari or lambos over priced and not as quick...anywhere near as quick. ....
5. There is something way more pleasurable in using something you have put together, like an old school project you made 30 years ago that you just cant throw away......it has a bit of your charactor in it.....
6. Owning a Ferrari is all about status.........totally the opposite of an Ultima....
7. On a personal note its all about the build. I recently bought a 3 axis microlight for a fraction of the price of an ultima. It cost virtually sod all to run every year and sod all to fly about in....prob less than a ford fiesta to fuel and its the most fun ive ever had period...id highly recommend it.....and it will get you laid way more than an Ultima.......:-)

So rather than starting a new thread, since there's no t/c etc how much hp could be classed as drivable?

There's a 1750hp version on youtube which must be a hoot!

Found Ultima on the net years ago while at school. Wanted one ever since. For me it's more about the journey and achievement, right from the start of the build preparations to the road trips ahead.

I bought an Ultima for a few reasons:
1. It makes good financial sense due to the difficulty in building and registering one here in Australia. Good depreciation (or potentially appreciation depending on how laws change here)
2. I like to have unique things. Whenever I buy something it isn't popular but then it becomes popular I get rid of it.
3. I realized that for me performance is the most important thing (over comfort, looks etc) and the Ultima provides the best bang for buck I've found. I still own a Lancer Evolution for rally and Chrysler 300C SRT8 for daily driving. Need something for all occasions.
4. And finally, the most important factor when I buy a car. When I drove in one before buying mine, it a) made me feel like a kid again and b) made my balls tingle. This, just like the butt dyno, is the most powerful factor to me buying this car.

In Australia at least, I was 24 when I bought my Ultima, I had a C63 before which was 4.5k per year to insure, so before I bought the Ultima I got a quote and it was only 1.2k per year. Got to love how statistics plays a role in pricing for insurance, where most people wont drive their kit cars.
