Surround Sound for Sky
Discussion
Now that Sky have announced F1 is to be done in 5.1, I need to sort out a surround sound system for my lounge.
I have a DVD Surround sound system at the moment, but it only connects to the telly by a simple L + R cables.
Am I right by thinking this isn't going to be giving me full effect unless i'm watching a DVD?
If so, what system do you reccomend? I also want to connect to my PS3. So don't need a blue ray player or anything to go with it.

You need an amp that can decode Dolby Digital 5.1, and also has an Optical (TosLink/S-PDIF) input.
Sky HD boxes do not carry 5.1 over HDMI.
Your existing amp may decode Dolby Digital Pro Logic via the phono inputs, but it won't be the proper surround sound experience you're after.

I've just today found this out too ..
I had sky fitted and asked the guy to connect it up to the surround sound for me so that I too was ready for the F1 season in a couple weeks or so. He wasn't so forthcoming and said he's connected it up to the telly for me so I can play dvd's but would let my husband fiddle about with the cables as he wasn't too sure, yeah right..
He said it could be connected up ok but the picture quality wouldn't be so good but after reading all the comments on here I think he was fibbing totally.. He did attempt to explain but I couldn't follow him, he lost me totally the minute he started mentioning I have only one hdmi out or something..
