Hello Gents,

One of the boys at work is selling his Eltax symphony 6.2 speakers. There is 5 speakers and a separate sub.

My questions is, what would I need to purchase to get these working?
There is no amp or cables, it is just the speaker units.

I would like to get it hooked up to the tv / dvd player and also so I could plug laptop / I-phone in also.

I know I am going to need an Amp but that's where my knowledge ends.....
Any help and advice greatly appreciated.

PS, I am not looking to spend to much so be nice!

Is '6.2' the model name of the floorstanders or the configuration of the system - if the later, you're missing a centre/rear and another sub.

For basic surround sound either go used (avforums has a good classified section) - with format support continuing to move forward, last year (s) latest and greatest are available at 20-50% of original rrp.

Stick to reputable makes like Denon, Pioneer Yamaha etc and you won't go far wrong - look for stuff in your budget then search the forum for opinion.

If you have a DVD player it'll be DD or DTS - old surround format now but still capable of good results on a budget - you'll need a toslink (fibre optic) or coax (single line level electrical cable) to connect the data stream from DVD to your processor/amplifier.

IIRC the 6.2 is actually a specific model of speaker, a floor stander I believe, I'd imagine your 5 speakers are a pair of the 6.2 with a pair of smaller speakers for rears and a centre.

I remember the symphony 6 my mate had as being pretty good for the price, which was pretty cheap.

With a cheap older amp this is IMO going to be much better than a crappy all in one system from Currys.

Does the speaker set have a sub at all? If I'm right an they are floor standing mains a sub isn't as vital but I'd still suggest a cheap one would be a good upgrade.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have managed to get some pictures of what he has, see below!
He is only wanting £30 for the lot which I think is a pretty good deal really.

How do I know what Amp I would need, i.e. how many outputs / inputs etc?

Like I say above, I am a complete novice when it comes to this stuff!

Most 5.1 receivers will run those quite happily - sold by Richer sounds back in the day IIRC. You'll need speakers cable X 5 runs for each speaker, probably/possibly two pairs of banana plugs to connect the cable to the front speakers, and a few sets of RCA interconnects/optical (TOLSlink)? to connect all your sources TV/SKY/DVD/PC etc etc to your AV Receiver.

First hit on Ebay for 'Denon AVR' http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_tr...

You've got to buy a blu-ray now surely? Or get into the murky world of Kodi or whatever it's called these days?

I'd buy those for £30, not that I have a need as I'm already well served for speakers and HiFi seperates.

Do you have a budget for the amp?

I have bought them now!

I will now also need a new dvd / blu ray player as I have just realised my one doesn't have a optical connection frown or any output connection at all apart from the connections for the surround sound speakers....

Was looking at no more than £150 - £200 for the amp, obviously second hand would be good enough.

£150-£200 will actually get you something semi decent new from Richer Sounds or something much better but older.

If you go for new or 2nd hand but recemtish you'll get HDMI inputs on the amp with a single output to the TV, the amp will deal with the sound and then pass the video to the TV, all switching between sources will be dealt with by the amp.

Going slightly older will get a better quality of amplification but you may forego HDMI and have to use either optical or coax for audio.

I tend to favour the classifieds at Avforums for 2nd gear, maybe try a wanted ad giving your budget and see what gets offered.
