5.1 - Rear Speaker Placement Query
Discussion
I've got a rather modest home entertainment setup.
I've got some 5.1 speakers (Logitech Z5500 - don't laugh), but I've never got round to putting the rear speakers up.
My thoughts were that I've never been convinced I could get the placement right - i.e. to the left and right of the listener.
I'm thinking of upgrading speakers and I've now got to decide whether I want to go for 5.1, or just get some good stereo speakers.
(terrible) pictures to illustrate my situation - first a floor plan:

And a picture facing backwards showing the main sofa - theres not a lot of wall space to spread the speakers apart with:

Can anyone share their thoughts on the best place for the speakers?

One should be where the lamp is, the other should be the other side of the sofa.
If you didn't want it in front of the window though, you could go for the other corner. Your amp should be able to adjust the relative volume levels to compensate for the distance difference.
With you sitting on the back wall, the rear speakers should be pointing at 45 degrees into the centre of the room, or, rotated inwards towards the listeners ears.
