Anyone upgraded from 40inch to 50inch
Discussion
I'm interested in people's views on this as well. I have a 10 year old 42" Panasonic plasma which was top of the range at the time. I'm thinking of replacing it with this http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/lg/49...
We went buy an Ipad mini and started lookin at this as we d seen a 50in we both liked.
Sad but true we went home and made a cardboard template of what it would look like, in the space we have it would just look ridiculous so we didn't bother with that, but we will probably up grade to the same size we have now (40in) but in the curve.

Oh, I thought you were talking about waist measurement.

Went from LG 42 to Panasonic 50 a few months ago.
Initially, it looked ridiculous on the wall and felt like it took over the room but like anything, you get used to it and it becomes the norm.
Make sure you get a good quality of screen - anything low end will look terrible if you are too close to it. One of our sofas is about 12 feet away from the to and anything not being shown in HD looks like we are watching TV from 1970 - terrible colour, blurry edges etc.
HD looks great though. Tempted to go 4K but no need as yet.

Just before last Christmas I upgraded our 42" to a 50" 4K job. The older telly was six or seven years old and the screen was starting to go a bit so that combined with the lure of shiny things and a Christmas bonus from work meant a new telly was on the cards.
Funny thing is it's actually smaller than the old telly. The viewable area goes pretty much to the edge now so the physical dimensions are just about the same plus it's a lot thinner so doesn't take up any more room in the lounge. Also, the sofas are about 25ft from the screen so you don't sit too close either meaning the picture quality's very good, especially when watching blu rays.
Finally the 3D bit's a bit of a bonus. I wasn't interested in it in the slightest but it seems you can't get a telly without it these days. A couple of our blu rays had 3D versions in them so we gave them a go - the Pixar type stuff is especially good. Not sure I'd ever bother with a curved screen though, that does seem particularly faddish.

Remember TVs are measured diagonally so you may need to brush up your schoolboy trigonometry.
You cannot judge how big a TV is in a shop they all look smaller than they will at home.
Also while a huge TV is great for movies,a newsreader with a 3 foot head may be a bit much on a daily basis!

Im wanting to get a bigger tele but dont know if jumping from my current 42 to a 49/50 will be much of a jump?
A lot of it will depend on the room size, wall / cabinet you intend to mount it on and how far you plan to sit from the unit.We recently went from a 46" to 55". We're fortunate in that our living room is a decent size so the larger TV was accommodated very easily and looked like it was meant to be.
In terms of adjusting our vision to the bigger screen, that took all of about 30 seconds.
Conversely, a mate has a 65" screen in a room some half the size of ours. Either side of the TV overhangs the chimney breast he's fitted it to, it overpowers everything else in his living room, looks horribly out of place and, because they need to sit so close to it, the picture quality is ropey as anything.
Both our 46" and 55" TVs are Samsung.
The 55" is 4k (6800 series) and has an excellent picture. However, the 46" (albeit an older unit) is a higher specification 8000 series and I've yet to see a TV with better picture quality.
Even if you stick with the same manufacturer, the quality will vary significantly throughout the range - you pays your money, you takes your choice.
I'd have said that 12' from a decent 50" TV (with a decent source signal) would be fine.

Last year we went from a 32" CRT which was 14 years old and as deep as it was wide to a 50" Sony LED because we like watching films and going to the cinema is not a great experience. As you can probably imagine, it was a significant step up!
Had to rearrange the living room though which actually made the room work better. Great idea about the cardboard mock-up though!
So I guess the takeaway is use a mock up for size and see if a bit of shuffling around of furniture will make the room better anyway.

Do samsung make good tvs, the one im looking at is full hd, 50 inch, 100hz
I currently have a hitatchi, i sit about 4 foot away when i play the xbox. And about 12 foot away when i watch tv.
Will 50 inch be too much?
12 foot away is fine for a 50inch in my opinion and experience. I currently have a hitatchi, i sit about 4 foot away when i play the xbox. And about 12 foot away when i watch tv.

I wouldn't go larger than that myself as I'm more interested in the resolution and how thin it is once you get to 50"
We have gone from a 1st gen 37" sharp LCD to a 50" Samsung 4k screen and although it looks bigger the fact the Sharp had a 1" border around the TV actually makes the new TV look smaller than 50".
Our front room has doubled in size since we changed as well so that might also have something to do with it.
