Hi all,

We are looking at getting rid of our Virgin box / phone / internet etc. and replacing with a Humax recorder then going with a cheaper broadband / phone provider.

Has anyone done this?

I am more than happy with Freeview channels and only went with Virgin for the recording capability.
We can get a much better deal on phone and internet as a separate system.

So, is this worth doing?

Thanks.

For freeview you will need a working aerial.

Have you spoken to Virgin? Generally speaking Virgin charge very little for a basic Tv package in many cases its free. The bulk of your bill is probably internet and phone. its worth checking and maybe re negotiating.

Dont forget that if you move from Virgin any other broadband provider will use the BT line to supply broadband and line rental will be payable.

I looked at it before re-negotiating with Virgin late last year, for us it didn't make sense, financially or otherwise really.

The catch is always the line rental as poster above has mentioned, compulsory even though few of us ever use land lines any longer.

Thanks guys,

Virgin will be increasing our cost to £50 / month in Feb.
I'll get the Wife to tell them we are leaving and see what they say.

Just been looking online and can get a Humax 1TB box which will connect to wifi.
Virgin have a Fibre optic and phone package for £5 / month plus the £17.99 line rental.
This will obviously be cheaper unless Virgin come up with something so we'll see.

We have an existing aerial as we have Freeview on other TV's in the house.

Anyone know how many hours you can record on a 1TB box?

Thanks.

1TB would allow a fair few hours, even of HD I would think. Apparently the next Gen TIVO boxes are ditching HDD's & going Cloud based.

Check you can put up with the Humax EPG. It's dreadful.

A few years ago we had Virgin, all the channels (sports, movies) which was about £90 a month and supposedly 100mb broadband but the water board cut through our cable one day which left us without the service for two weeks until it was repaired. And the router was terrible, quite unreliable and my wife's tablet simply would not connect to it at all yet seems to connect to every other router we've ever tried.

It was actually really fortunate because after digging out an old Sky plus box which we used as a freesat box (albeit very limited functionality) we realised we didn't miss it much.

We were going through the process of buying a new place so made a decision not to get it installed at the new place. Instead we opted for the following:-

- A reconditioned Humax freesat box for about £180 (new place had a satellite dished installed). Can't remember if it's 500gb or 1tb but we rarely use all the space up. HD Picture/sound quality is fantastic although I've never had a box where I haven't thought that.
- A very cheap broadband deal where I paid the line rental up front for about £150, monthly BB was £2.50 plus calls and we got a voucher for £120 back. I can't ever remember a time where I have wished for a quicker BB, even streaming Iplayer etc has been fine
- Recently we got a couple of NOW TV boxes with vouchers. Absolute bargain in my opinion, £15 for two months movies inc box and £19 for 6 months entertainment (including Sky one, Atlantic and a few other channels) and I can use the service on my phone/tablet.

I can't ever imagine going back Sky or Virgin now. Just so expensive for what you get in my opinion although my wife misses watching the footie sometimes.

I've read that the EPG is pretty slow on the Humax...any experience of other brands?

I think we will definitely go with a set top box and separate broadband and phone provider.
Now we just have to find a good deal!

I gave up with Sky, switched to BT TV.

The BT TV box is basically a Humax Freeview box, with the extra channels being delivered over the internet. Comes free when you sign up.

The whole lot - line rental, Infinity fibre, TV and calls package is costing me £53 a month. Looks like a similar price to Virgin, but £25 cheaper than the Sky/BT combo I had previously.

The EPG is painfully slow on my older Humax, don't know if the new ones are any better?

On the plus side mine has all the custom firmware on it, so you can browse and search the EPG really quickly on a laptop or phone, and set all your recordings from there. Again, not sure if you can do that with the latest ones?

If you currently have Virgin cable and want to move you may need a BT line installed to be able to get broadband.

Humax seem to make 3 types of Freeview recorders currently:

Basic recorders, no fancy features
Youview recorders, which allow you to set recordings from a phone or tablet. The BT-branded box is one of these.
Freeview Play recorder, which has a built-in DLNA server, so you can watch recordings on other smart devices. No remote programming features though.

I have one of each type.

We went from a Humax 9150T which struggled at times to a Humax Youview which is very responsive, has 7 day catchup and can set recordings on your phone

You also don't need a separate NOW TV box as the app is built in

HUMAX

This one looks quite good, and has an app to programme from a mobile.

On another note....has anyone tried the Panasonic ones?
