Hi all..
I have an old Denon amp (AVR-4306) and my Sky/ Blu Ray are connected to it via HDMI. I have one HDMI going to my new Sony 4k TV
Do I need to buy a new amp to get the full benefit of the 4k TV?
thanks

At this stage it will make no difference as there's no 4k content on DVD or SKY, but when it comes in the next few months almost certainly yes, you will need a new amp. The Dennon is c.10 years old, and won't have 4k pass through if you connect a UHD DVD or SKY Q box to it via HDMI. You might get round it though, by connecting your SKY/DVD directly to your TV and using optical cables to pass the sound to the amp.

Might be time to upgrade though... a new amp could support 4K AND give you access to Dolby True HD decoding.

HDMI V1.4 or higher is required to transmit 4K. This was released earlier than 10 years ago so I doubt your amp has the required support. However always check the specifications/owners forums for a definite answer.

There's variables to factor in to a possible upgrade. Does the Sony display meet the UHD standard (not for broadcast, but for UHD Blu-Ray) or is it an earlier, 4K in resolution only display? It'll still be able to view native UHD content, but not the full colour space. Retailers will need to start being more honest on this front, as the Premium UHD banner that adorns compliant displays (similar to THX of old) makes it obvious to the consumer what they're paying for.

Regarding AV Receiver upgrades, they're the brains of the operation and despite now being crammed full of tech, connections and futureproofing, have come down a lot in price. So 4K passthrough, HDMI 2.0 and HTCP 2.2 are available in quite low price point models now. So long as the AVR has the forementioned ability, it'll be futureproof for the next decade, as 8K etc isn't around the corner.
