Space between mounting bolt holes on back of tvs. standard?

I hung a 28inch tv on the wall in our house when we first moved in, then hung a floating shelf above it. I originally was going to use my old 48inch non HD plasma so have a beefy swing out system on the wall.

Now I want to swap the tv for a 40inch one and think it should just clear the shelf. My only concern is if the mounting bolts are in different places on different tvs. I cut down the plate the tv hooks hang on to as it was massive compared to the tv. I have measured a 38 inch Smasung my friend has and the mounting bolt holes look to be in a similar position.

Is there a standard? do they just put them in the middle of the tv?

There is the VESA standard which most manufacturers seem to conform to. The problem is that the VESA standard changes as the screen size increases. I have seen larger TVs with VESA 200 (4 mounting holes in a square all 200mm apart) or VESA 400.

That would make sense with what I have seen. My old tv had quite wide spacing but my current samsung and the 40inch one I have seen seems to have the 200mm on the back.

So I think if I stick with a Samsung at that size I should be good.

You can get adaptor plates if you need to convert one size to the other.
