Sony W7 - Optical cable only giving stereo?
Discussion
Hi,
I'm hoping someone will be able to help! We currently have a Sonos play bar and 2 Play 1's as surrounds, running from my Sony W7 tv.
The TV and the soundbar are connected via optical, and whilst watching the TV, the tv is only passing through a stereo signal via the optical lead and not a dolby signal I have been told? So the Play 1's don't actually do anything whilst watching TV.
They are fine whilst playing music all of it works. I spoke to Sonos last night and they said to plug the Sky box directly into the Sonos via the optical lead which does work, however my Xbox one now won't work via it, and I have to turn the sky box off as well as the TV each time.
I assume I need to turn to change the optical out setting somewhere? I had a look but with no joy.
Thanks,
Dan

Have you RTFMed?
A quick Google came up with this
To use multichannel audio, connect to an external audio system compatible with Dolby Digital using an optical cable, and select [Audio System].
[Audio System] must be selected to listen to 5.1 multichannel audio.

It's not an issue with the play bar though it's the settings on the TV? The playbar works fine when directly plugged into the sky box but this eliminates other sources that could be plugged into the to, hence why I want to run the optical straight from the tv.This is the first hit.

OP - not sure the exact specifications of your television - however - most televisions will only pass stereo over optical - it's not a direct pass through from the dolby signal etc. Not sure on your model, but some televisions have an option in the setup to change the digital output to different settings.

You want to be looking in the audio settings of your TV and looking to change from PCM to bistream DTS or whatever, assuming the TV outputs full 5.1. Ths is how it is on my Samsung anyway
Unfortunately it would seem my TV only has Auto or PCM as an option on the optical out!
Would have thought it would have been ok as a tv only a couple of years old.

Our W8 Series will output 5.1 through Optical if you switch it Auto. We had the opposite problem, with it trying to output 5.1 to our amp (which is 5.1 but only had the fronts connected, so stereo).

So knock it to Auto and it should work with the Sonos.
