I've been planning a tv for the kitchen for a while, but not got round to it yet. Might be getting a small bonus at work so was thinking about using that to fund the TV.

It's going on the wall in the kitchen, but actually I'm going to recess it into the wall, no more than a couple of inches, so it wants to be as slim as possible. How slim are TVs going these days, I've not really been paying attention?

Doesn't need to be a monster, as I'll be barely 2' away from it and don't want to spend more than £300 on it. Doesn't need to be 4k or anything daft, will be used mostly with a Chromecast, but want a freeview tuner too. Not bothered if it's a smart TV or not, though there is internet to the TV point.

So priorities are slim and an appropriate size.

The idea is that rather than watching TV on the sofa I'll queue up a series of whatever and spend more time cooking than I do at the moment.

Ta.

I've done a bit of looking about to see whats what and really struggled to find many options for good spec TVs in that size range. Conversely there's loads of choice between £100 and £300 for 27" and 28" computer monitors. All 1080p and upwards, but few with a TV tuner built in.

Personally I never watch live TV, but the boss does, so I guess I'm looking at a monitor with 2x HMDI so I can plug a freeview box and a ChromeCast in.

Has anyone done this and can point to any reasons that it won't work?

I think I need to resolve issues around sound output and also infrared access for the freeview box if it's all to be recessed into the wall with trim up to the edge of the screen. There's also a question of being able to switch stuff on and off without access to the buttons on the monitor. I do have access from a cupboard behind the stud wall, but need to make things as user-friendly as possible.

I'm tempted to fit a compact PC in the wall space to run the Plex Home Theater, which would allow remote control of media as well as Chromecast output for audio which can send the sound to the ceiling speakers in the kitchen. I have the kit sat doing nothing at the moment.

Will a 32" not fit? You'll get a bit more choice then.

I've not measured up yet, I think a 32" would fit, but would be far too big to watch from 2-3' away. I suspect 27" is about the limit, but might also be pushing it a bit. As ever it's a tricky balance between, "Wow that's really cool!" and the missus going mental because it's too big!

I did see that one on AO, but now I've seen what sort of computer monitor I can get for that sort of money I'm leaning more down that route, if I can work out the user interaction side of things.

One positive for monitors is that they efficiently detect signals at startup and switch-off of the source. Always annoyed me having to switch on Sky and the TV!
