Other TVs to consider
Discussion
Our 32" LG plasma TV (32PG6000) is starting to annoy me picture quality wise so I'm looking to replace it with a Sony Bravia KDL40WD653BU which is currently at £349. Having seen the Sony in the flesh, I like the sharpness of the picture when fed from a standard terrestrial digital HD source. I don't own (and don't plan to own) any 4K sources and neither do I have any gaming machines (X-Box etc). I won't be using it to stream internet feeds (our BB is circa 1.5-2.5Mbps
) and will be feeding it through a Humax Freeview box, the audio from which feeds my amp and speakers (left, right, centre and sub), thus the audio quality from the TV is irrelevant.
Any other recommendations for HD TVs to go and look at? No bigger than 40" and preferably around the same budget.

Just bought one of these

Seems to do what it says on the tin and relatively easy to use.

Consider buying a used 46W905, many came with 5 year warranties so will have 3+ years left on them.
A completely different league to the D653 picture quality wise, in fact still one of the best LCDs ever made.
I know they are only selling for £350 as I was looking at moving mine on, which I won't be doing for that amount, it will get put in the bedroom.
I paid £950 for mine from John Lewis 18 months ago, when it was offer down from £1499.
Problem you may have is people will probably hold onto the 40" model for what they go for.

Thanks so far folks, now searching for used 40W905As but not finding any yet (only looked on ebay so far). If Samsung seem to top the Which? polls, any second hand ones to go for like the Sony above? Guess I should go to the local library and read some back issues of Which? magazine. (edited to add) From one Sony review as a comparator, I've found the Samsung UE40F8000 as their 2013 flagship model so also searching for second hand ones of these

I'm a member of WHICH so here's some examples around your price point.
http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue40ku6000-hdr-4k...
WHICH 71% "Great quality at a reasonable price
Pro's : Decent picture and sound quality, 4K, smart TV
Con's : No Freeview Play, only one remote, no Scart socket
http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue40k5500-led-ful...
WHICH 70% "Performance beyond the price tag"
Pro's : Nice colour and contrast balance, decent sound, easy to use smart TV
Cons : Poor motion handling, no 4K, no Freeview Play
Also available in 32". Which says "We don't see many smaller TVs that are good enough to be Best Buys, but this 32-inch Samsung comes very close. If you're after a modest-sized set, this is the one to go for."
On size, I'd look at the option to go for larger as it's likely that a more modern set will have a much smaller bezel area so overall size may not be that much bigger than an older 32". I have Samsung TV's so a bit biased, but never been let down by the quality of them. Happy hunting !

Just look at the reviews on AVforums and HDTVTest etc.
Far better than Which when it comes to TV reviews.
Which tend to concentrate on whether the buttons on the remote are big enough for the old owner to be able to use, where as the guys on the AV sites will discuss the TV ability to show detail, not blue with motion, shows colours properly so it looks realistic etc. etc.
