Will ATMOS work in my lounge?
Discussion
Very few of us are fortunate to have a 3 seat sofa 12 feet in front of a panel with free space behind us. In the UK we often just don't have the space. I suppose the same could be said though if you're at the back and far to one side in a cinema.
If you take a look at my thread there are a few diagrams of optimum speaker placements.

My take on it would be assuming your receiver comes with a mic to set itself up (they usually allow you to give it several listening positions) you would probably benefit.
And it it's a movie with a sound track you really want to enjoy get yourself a big beanbag and put it in front of the French doors

The trouble is, the lounge wasnt designed with HT in mind. Ideally I'd block up the cavity slders and have a door by the single sofa. But as Its a year old house it can wait.
I'm thinking my best option is in-ceiling speakers, but due to sofa and door placement theres no real option for rears. Would that effect the atmos?

ceiling speakers, and cram the rears in the corners if poss.
its going to be a compromise, but not too bad.
I've been in Dolby Labs theatre and demo rooms in Soho; they had several systems set up to demo - theatre was AMAZING but the compromised home setup wasn't much different to the reference home setup in sound / effect

OP, Sounds like it is not a new build/re-decoration in progress?
If so then you may want to leave it for now, as Atmos content is increasing but is not everywhere yet so not a must have for now. It is more to fit it in if you are getting work done anyway.
I would instead consider putting a projector screen above the patio doors and fitting 5.1 with that, as with that L shaped sofa, it seems like you can sit both ways, will make a far bigger improvement to your viewing of movies/games than atmos.

It does seem so far atmos is still a work in progress for non-dedicated rooms
Heres the gist of it

The room is ideal for a proper set, just need to block up the door and move it.

Can you not put the rears right in the corner? Ideally you'll want them to get the full benefits.
Any chance of some pictures of your lounge?
Thats my initial thoughts, but where to put the middle atmos onesAny chance of some pictures of your lounge?

No, we were going to build but a year old house made more sense as no hidden extras. If so then you may want to leave it for now, as Atmos content is increasing but is not everywhere yet so not a must have for now. It is more to fit it in if you are getting work done anyway.

5.1.2 is easily acheivable, even 5.1.4.Heres the gist of it

As mentioned earlier, put the rears right in the corners. It's very difficult to get the ideal setup in a home. I squished 5.1.4 in my living room. Its not ideal, but it works. Besides the amp should work everything out.
Have a look...

Have you considered these? http://www.klipsch.com/dolby-atmos-speakers
The Atmos speakers fire upwards and bounce the sound off the ceiling. I have a Yamaha Avetage amp and was looking at these. Gives you a chance to try it out without cutting holes. Given the lacklustre response to Atmos vs 5.1, I decided not to bother.

Thats a nice set up Kam, whats it like with the ceiling speakers above the rears? atmos is new to me and theres no where local to see it set up.
It works really well. There is good seperation. I do wish I put the rears a litlle lower. It's well worth putting in the ceiling speakers. The amp will measure where the speakers are and compensate accordingly.
When I was doing my setup, I had some A/V guys come in and say Atmos would not work in my living room, I am glad I never listened to them. Over a year later and it still blows me away.
Do it, you will not be disappointed.

Lower in walls should work in place of your 90s? Which is probably a little more child friendly at ear height (sub ports are a great place to store duplo).
Yes, ideally they should have been at ear height. However, it works.I have had my little one has unscrewed the speaker cable from the fronts before. Nothing in the ports yet, well nothing that I know off.

I have 5.1.2 with my Aventage amp. I use a pair of Kef Eggs for front height presence speakers angled downwards. It works quite well I think, ceiling speakers would be better but I'm not sure my landlord would approve The Atmos speakers fire upwards and bounce the sound off the ceiling. Pardon me for interrupting Tony, but may I ask after your media unit? I need a new one & I like that. Thanks.
Ive just sold it lol, but i got it from freedom furniture about 8 years ago. But these guys are UK based and have similar http://www.sonorous.tvTS, Sorry, been out of the country on a project with crap internet.
Agree and confirm all that has been said so far:-
Speakers at head height, when sitting
Atmos would work, but personally use 2 rather than 4 due to the short distance to the screen
Inside (either side of entrance door) will be best seats
Can easily do its all in-ceiling (even sub is wanted) so 'hiding' it all is possible
Doesnt matter that much that seats backs are level with rears
I have a demo room here, so if you are local you are welcome to pop over.
