Over 10 years on PH and first post in this forum.

I rarely use AV kit but have an old multi CD player and some Gale mini monitors in the loft that I got down the other day and linked up to my very basic Orbit Sound sound bar type thing.

I have seen a basic AV Receiver 5:1 with added sub woofer output for under £200, are there any downsides of using this as both my surround sound system plus HiFi amp? Initially I'll only have the Gales as fronts, use my current sub and I'll need to buy a new centre. I'll get some additional speakers for the rears at a alter date.

Is your subwoofer active or passive?

The AV receiver sub out usually requires the sub to be active.

You would probably be cheaper/easier to buy a AV bundle from richer sounds than try to make it work with old kit.

No downsides to what you are going to use it for, i use mine as surround sound and hifi amp, the sound off them is actually very good.

Get over to avforums and check out the classifieds.

AV amps over there only a few months old originally retailing at over £1000 available for £100-£200 because they don't support 4K HDR or the latest 11.2.4 atoms soundtracks.

Something like a Denon 7.1 amp still supports HD audio and can sound very good with stereo if all effects are defeated or 'pure' is activated.
