Hi,

I finally took the plunge and bought a receiver and speakers to go with the epson eh-tw5600 I bought earlier in the year. However I can't get the audio and video to sync. The amp is the onkyo txrn686. The amp has auto AV sync, the projector also supports this. I've tried manually adjusting the AV sync. I can get it ok for parts of films, but not spot on for a whole film and when you change blu rays the new film is out again.

Previously I had connected the projector to a sound bar (either with a 10m headphone cable or blue tooth) without the sync issue.

The only source i am using is a Sony 6700 blu ray connected to the amp by hdmi, the amp is connected to the speaker via hdmi.

Any ideas before I try and get a refund?

So far I have tried

- firmware update on the receiver
- factory reset receiver an blu ray
- checked blu ray output is not pcm (?)
- recalibrated the amp (6 times)
- ensured arc is on in the receiver
- ensured CEC is on in he receiver
- set hdmi Lync to on in the projector

I'm new to all this so some of the above may have no bearing on the issue, but I'm getting desperate.

Any advice would be greatly received

Thanks

Cables should be video source to amp, amp to video output all via HDMI as you have. Keep the audio and video signals together for as long as possible so avoid optical outputs etc. Unless you're projector has a tuner you wont be using ARC and it may cause issues in some circumstances so try switching off if possible.

Make sure only one device is doing the image & audio processing. I would suggest the amp is probably the best to try first so switch off any up scaling video processing or audio delay settings in both the Bluray and the projector. Use the auto setting oin the amp to start.

If this is still no good try the amp's manual setting. Does your projector have an audio output? if so it may be worth turning up the volume on that as it can be used in conjunction with the amp/speaker output. Anything that echos you can tell is out of sync. Adjust the delay until the echo disappears and then it should be in sync and you can shut-off the projector volume. (Method also works for TVs).

If that doesn't work then you'll need to shut-off the processing and delays on the amp and adjust each video source manually. Although I'd be surprised as Onkyo kit is pretty good.

My Old Sky HD box used to go out of sync on occasions. A good old fashioned reset cleared that, but you've said you've done firmware updates etc so I presume that's covered?

Good luck Lip sync issues are a bugger to track down & correct for. I doubt it's a compatibility or hardware issue and worth persevering rather than going down the refund route just at the moment because you'll likely get the same with other kit..

Thanks, I'll give that a go. Independently I'm really chuffed with the amp (paired it with a monitor audio 5.1 speaker set) and the projector. But when working together the sync issue is driving me insane.

As said, keep it simple and switch off anything "auto".

Bluray - HDMI - Amp - HDMI(or speaker cable) - Speakers. That's the audio side.

Then Projector - HDMI - Amp. That's the video side.

Now, turn off any kind of audio / video sync options in the Bluray, Amp, and Projector.

Finally, play a bluray and manually sync the audio with the amp's built in tool. It's easy enough, just keep tweaking until spoken audio seems "right". It's very natural and obvious and there is quite a bit of leeway. When you do this I can guarantee that no one will speak for ages and ages, really annoying :-)

You might need to do this for each source (i.e. AVR/Youview etc). But only ever once.

It should never need doing again, until you get a new projector (the projector is where your delay is).

p.s. the auto sync must be fairly clever if it managed to keep a bluetooth linked soundbar in step as bluetooth causes a big lag.

Another thing to check is that frame interpolation is switched off on the projector. This takes processing time and can cause the picture to lag behind the audio, plus it makes the video look too smooth as if it was filmed on a camcorder (soap opera effect). I think on Epsons it's in the Image menu.
