Best Smart TV/Box Interface?

Having changed my Mum's 5 year old TV for a budget Toshiba and being amazed just how good the picture is with Freeview HD I'm thinking of replacing my own ancient Panasonic plasma.
It only gets used with Sky, and with a Now TV movies subscription I should be able to lose Sky and save myself £85/month.
Any views on the best interface between either using one built into a new TV or whether to treat the TV as a display and use some external box like I do the Sky box?
If so, which box?
