Streaming movies - dragging myself up to date
Discussion
Hi any advise on what to go for to stream movies. I don’t want to go down the route of a monthly subscription, but we both miss not renting movies. So we would like the ability to buy a film to stream not necessarily keep? We have considered Apple, Netflix, etc
But to be honest find the whole thing confusing.
Anyone got experience of this sort of thing? Newer films are the priority just as they would of been in the old DVD rental days? Truly am lost on which way to go.

Amazon might be worth a look, although I'm not sure if you have to pay a monthly subscription. I have prime which gives access to some free stuff, but the majority of the time I will pay to rent or keep films that aren't available on prime. Normally 3 or 4 quid to 'rent' for a couple of days
As long as you have an Amazon account you can just pay per movie with no monthly subscription. Obviously you’ll need the Prime Video app on your TV or via a Firestick or suchlike.
AppleTV would involve more initial outlay but I do believe you may get a bigger and better selection of films to rent (but don’t take my word for that as I have not done a proper comparison).
AppleTV does a lot of local buffering/processing which I believe gives better picture quality too, especially at 4K.
All imho of course.

If renting there is no need to limit yourself to one service, most have year round sales of various things so it pays to keep an eye on all of them. Amazon tend to be very good for newer releases, many get dropped down to £1.99 occassionally.
We have the Roku+ Stick which basically brings a few of those services (Amazon, Rakuten and so on) under one roof with a central search function.
I have found Amazon to offer the best picture quality generally although the difference can be subtle.
