Presumably others on here have Sonos, and have "optimised" the sound using the app, whereby one waves an iphone around for a minute whist the system emits Doctor Who style noises. Any idea if this system is based on science, as it seems like snake oil to me.

Seems like snake oil, but does make a difference to the sound IMO

It is science, how effective that science is would be another matter...

i did it once - sounded a bit more trebley (is that a word?) but didn't blow my socks off hence i have little red dots next to 3 rooms on my sonos app telling me it still needs to be done lol

It's science and it is called room eq.

Your room shape and furniture absorb, and reflect various frequencies. Deadening some and amplifying others.

With music the ideal setup is where all frequencies, from low (bass) to high (trebble) are equal in volume (flat curve on a graph). So all the sounds that make up your music get to you at the volume levels they were recorded at.

With room eq , test tones are played and you usually measure them from your listening position with a sound meter. In this case you are using your phone which can be a fairly reasonable substitute.

The software then looks for frequency bands that are too low or too high and then adjust the sound levels at those frequencies to try and flatten the graph - get everything equal.

On my Denon amp this reduces overly boomy bass and winds the trebble and volume back on the rear speaker that is nearest me. Makes a nice difference.

We bought a chunky Denon 7.1 AV amp just before christmas that came with an audyssey mic and funky tripod to autoset up the levels also.. didn't have time to run it at the time but think i will dig it out now after your positive comments. thank you smile

No problem. Part of the reason I bought a Denon with Audissey was for that reason. Spent far too long with laptops doing room EQs manually.
