Sound tests on YouTube
Discussion
I’ve just been trawling around on YouTube looking for some info on an old CD player I have and there are a lot of people posting videos of ‘sound tests’ or ‘high fidelity sound tests’ or sound comparisons between different kit.
They play a variety of music and the comments usually go yeah that sounds much better etc.
Am I missing something here ? How is it possible to listen to system a on YouTube and decide it sounds better than system b ?
I’ve found videos that enthusiasts have uploaded that will know more about hifi than I ever will but surly the common denominator here is YouTube ?

It's utterly pointless.
Youtube compresses the audio anyway.
Additionally, I've seen some videos where they are playing through speakers and relying on a camera / phone microphone to capture the audio - that's never going to capture the full essence of the sound quality, unless perhaps they are using very expensive microphones, but even then the room acoustics are going to come into play as well.
It's just the same as adverts for TV sets... on the TV... it's never going to convey picture quality is it!

You are both correct and wrong!
There is no way to reproduce the sound of hi-end audio using youtube. This, as you point out, is quite obvious. But you can get a feel for the difference in the setup (normally speakers). It's not a full and complete comparison as that would be impossible but you can hear the more obvious differences and get a feel for them.

Mmmm... I’ve listened to that through a pair of Sony 1000XM2’s .... I’m still not convinced !There is no way to reproduce the sound of hi-end audio using youtube.
