Ear buds for iphone

Am wanting to buy some decent ones for SWMBO for Christmas but am now totally confused with all the options. Have looked at the new Sony buds with noise cancellation (£218) and the reviews are mixed. There is a down side in that that one can't control volume but professional reviews seem to rave about them. The new Apple ear buds 'pro' are almost £250 but are they really that great? They are so new to have few user reviews and they are eye wateringly expensive.

Madam wishes to listen to her music when on the train/bus/beach etc, take calls whilst out and about but nothing more than that. Noise cancellation would be good and it is probably pointless buying something without this function. They need to work well with iphones as I dont this madam will be changing to android anytime soon. That would take a monumental effort on her part to learn how to use one (it taken 15+ years to not learn anything about all the Apple products she owns as she just uses me as her instruction manual and we all know how that works!).

Your suggestions and experiences would be most gratefully accepted!

I purchased the airpod pro’s, but none of the 3 earbud sizes fitted me (fail app test also)
Therefore noise cancellation didn’t work & they sounded awful, my £40 Amazon ones are far better for me!
I returned them & got a refund
I’m not alone, a google search found a big discussion around them not working for a fair proportion of buyers.
I’m sure they are great if they fit -
So get a gift receipt !

Your comments are helpful. Thanks. I have now found the other threads here, all of which give many opinions! It seems like the sensible thing to do would be to buy around £50 mark, see if they are something she gets on with and then go more expensive if she takes to the idea of listening to music/podcasts etc often. I can't see it myself but she seems convinced. I think it may be just something she wants rather than needs.

I use the first gen Apple air buds on the train £159. Work fine and once paired contact as soon as in ear. Charging in the case works well and last for numerous journeys before you need to plug in. Easy option I would say...

I would agree, but for the fact that they are not a great fit. Mine barely sit in my ear comfortably enough. If I am on a tube train there is no chance I will be hearing any music due to massive background noise. If you have ears into which they fit perfectly then that is great, unfortunately neither my wife nor I do. They are also pretty expensive for what they are.

With the comply tips (provided) they're almost noise cancelling too. Great sound, good battery life and easy to work. Highly recommended.

I had these for about 2 years but one of them gave up the ghost. They were ok, nothing special.

Fine. I read in some reviews that some people struggled, but found better results with the included foam tips.
The medium silicone ones fitted seem fine to me.

Once they are in I can’t really feel them, super comfortable.

I have the Sennheiser True Wireless, ones to avoid IMO. Sound good but have inherent design flaw meaning they turn on when the charging case runs out of juice. Then if nearby they’ll connect to your phone whilst in the case so they run out of battery, but not before wondering why you can’t hear any sound on your phone. Deeply annoying considering the price of them

I think the apple ones are terrible, not a good fit and terrible sound.

I have had loads over the years, I use in ears for around 3-4 hours a day.

I'm having moulds done in Jan for custom in ears.


Problem for me is I like to wear them lying down, too many these days are not rounded enough to be comfy doing this though.

I have yet to hear wireless ones that sound as good as these...

I bought a pair of these on the way to the train when I realised I had left me Sennheisers IE80's at home.
They are brilliant.

I have 5 pairs in the drawer as back ups.

They have plenty of weight, they are detailed but warm, and they are comfy.
They fit really, really well so cancel all noise. They are 50% cheaper than a pack of Sennheiser replacement buds.


I reckon you have got to really want wireless, for me you are paying a lot to get the same quality as a wired headphone.
I bough the Sony WH1000XM3 after reading the reviews, I know they are not an in ear, but they were £230 and in all honesty they are crap.
I got them trade and paid £60 for them so have ended up using them for watching TV late at night and that is it.
I like my dance stuff and the bass just sounds hard and lacking any warmth.

The in ear version I heard was the same.
Maybe it is my ears, but just didn't get what all the fuss was about.

I have the B&W P7's as well, I still prefer the little Pioneer ear buds.


To me it is all about fit, of course they have to perform, but these wireless ones are £30 in ears that you are paying £200+ for.

I’ve got a pair of AirPods Pro, and really like them as a generalist pair of buds. Noise cancelling is good but it took a wobbly on a flight and didn’t work at all on take off. For flight use I either go back to my old Bose QC3s, or alternatively a pair of cheap Shure buds with a Lightning adaptor as the noise isolation is perfect.

I have the Airpod Pro's and love them, Massive difference in sound quality between them and the normal Airpods. The noise cancellation is excellent, charging case is compact and easily fits in a pocket, they stay in my ears when I run for 40 minutes and the integration and ease of use with Apple products is second to none.

I’m sure the airpod pro are great if they fit. However they don’t fit a fair proportion, so are then useless.
Either try before you buy, or get from a store with easy returns ! I returned mine to Apple store as didn’t fit me. Refunded (although I wasn’t happy with their reason ‘buyers remorse’ No remorse about it, they don’t fit & were therefore worse than my £40 Amazon ones from another Chinese factory!)

I’ve had my AirPod pros for about 3 weeks now and love them. Noise cancelation is great for my commute on the train. Perfect for the gym (running & weights). I was very skeptical and had soMe highly rated expensive wired headphones before but these are in a different league. The only downside is the price, that being said I do think they’re worth every penny.
