I'm starting to look around for our next TV for our new home. Probably purchase this in the coming months in time for us moving in early March.

I'm looking to go OLED and the current sweet-spot I can see if the LG OLED65C9PLA which seems to tick most of the boxes and gets rave reviews. I'm primarily after an excellent display - I've already specced the audio system and have ruled out projectors as our room has large South facing windows.

The prices of both the 65" and 77" models are starting to fall, and no doubt will fall a bit further after Christmas and into the New Year - especially if LG continue to release their new models in March.

Question is, is the 77" version as good as (or better than) the 65" version? I remember buying a 60" Pioneer plasma 11 years ago which was awesome... but not quite as pin-sharp as its 50" sibling. If I do some serious man-maths I may be able to justify the 77" version but want to make sure that this is indeed the better option.

Anyone out there got experience of both sets? Any alternatives I could consider? Many thanks in advance smile

There are only 2 factors when choosing screen size, and you haven't mentioned either.

What do you watch, and how far away do you sit?

Thanks for the link - I'd seen that one a while back, so good to review... although a lot of discussion both for and against it on that forum.

I would say between 2.5m and 4m.

Mainly films in the evening: either blu-ray or 4k (Sky / Amazon / Netflix) sources, or HD content on Sky.

If you research "how close" and "what screen size" to get a real benefit from 4k resolution, you'll find that 65" at the average couch viewing distance is the starting size where it is noticeable ! So 77 will definitely be better and of course , bigger :-)

Distances guides are handy to understand there is an issue and what they are. The only decider must be the viewer. Go see it, if you like it, buy it.

Hell of a price difference though, 65c9 for £1799 vs £5999 for the 77".

You got to really want that size.

For me I would buy a 65" now and then bag a 77" in a year or so, will be a hell of a lot cheaper by then.

Thanks for the replies.

Yep, it is one hell of a price difference. I'm hoping the 77" pricing comes down a bit (or a lot) more after Christmas or in the lead-up to the release of the new models. The better half is sold on the larger TV so (more than!) half the battle is won smile

The 65 is massive enough. Takes two people to lift and set it up. After a month when mine ceased working, it's a two man collection job for the 65 and needs two men to return, 3 weeks later. I can only imagine how awkward a 77 would be.

The main issue for me is so much material is starting to look a bit ropey on a 65", some of the HD feeds these days are so low bitrate that 65" starts to show it up. 77" would be pushing that too far imho.

Some of the sets are huge getting

But once the smaller ones in the room you do become aclimitised and wish you had went bigger

For me it was 55 over 65 wish I'd weng for the 65 now

Well, that's not the case for everyone.

LG 65" OLED and everything is stunning, except SD - but then that's expected, and the reserve of "Can't pay we'll take it away".

We just set up (and had to return as it gave my other half motion sickness) an 82" Samsung - absolutely a two person job but not that difficult with care.

Shame, it was quite impressive!

Out of interest - did you switch off all the "enhacements" including smooth motion?

No, it wasn't in use for long so I didn't get to adjust anything - I gave the abbreviated version above, so for completeness:
The first program we watched was Graham Norton, not a film. These are shot differently with more close ups so she got fed up seeing Jennifer Anistons enormous head... Watching this before anything else was a mistake.
She also fundamentally thought it was too big - and gave me that look that said I would never convince her otherwise
The motion sickness was the icing on the cake that sealed the deal

It was a TV to go into a TV/cinema room not a lounge; we do have a 'normal' TV where she's supposed to be watching Graham Norton !

Thanks for the replies folks.

I think I'm going to stick with the 65" for now but put cabling in for a screen + 4k projector. Looking at the difference in price I think I could get all of that for the price of the 77", but end up with a much larger picture for movie nights. Sorted!

I just mean, when HD first came out some of the bitrates were amazing, even on a 100" projector screen it looked stunning, now, so much on TV is a bit pants in comparison.

But they have had to get far more HD channels into the same amount of space since then.

Don't get me wrong I love Sky and genuinely haven't watched anything other than HD now for a decade or more, But I think for TV 65" would be the max I would be happy with, some of it does look a bit soft now.

Sapphire 106" screen ordered and probably going with an Optoma UHD52ALV when released, spec seems very good for the price, although too new for reviews at present. This plus the LG C9 65" will still be over £2k cheaper than the 77" LG C9 alone, they will also disappear more easily in the room so it's a bit of a no brainer. Thanks for the suggestions which all helped smile

This was my original plan when designing the room but some g.t of an engineer decided I needed a supporting RSJ running at right angles to the joists above and completely obliterating my plans for a hidden projector screen.

I guess I didn't want the upstairs collapsing in me but did seem overkill.

Hey?

For the screen or projector?

That sounds like serious overkill.

I held my JVC DiLA in with 3 screws and some B&Q raw plugs, the screen was held in with a screw each end.
