New TV with HDMI(ARC) + old soundbar with just HDMI...
Discussion
Just picked up a new LG TV with both regular HDMI and HDMI(ARC). Old soundbar (Yamaha YSP40D) has 2 x HDMI IN and 1 x HDMI out.
In the past everything went into the soundbar (HDMI IN) and then one cable out to the TV.
On the new TV, I have plugged in a USB HDD full of my movies, and they play great. However, sound now comes from the TV internal speakers, obviously. I've plugged the HDMI into the HDMI ARC port on the TV, and the other end into the HDMI IN port on the soundbar. Sadly I just cannot get the sound to come out of the soundbar. Have set the TV sound to be via ARC rather than internal speakers, and tried all the various input options on the soundbar, but with no joy.
Any suggestions? Am I doing it wrong?
I'm also buying an optical audio cable as this is also worth a try as both units have the option to output sound from the TV optical and input into the soundbar.

If I'm reading this review correctly...
https://www.whathifi.com/yamaha/ysp-40d/review
https://www.avforums.com/threads/the-ysp-40d-hd-au... - AVforums - might get some specific help
it say "he only downside is that the Yamaha's HDMI inputs don't recognise multichannel PCM or other forms of HD audio."...
Assuming, it's all wired up correctly, and the settings are correct, might be worth seeing what the audio format is of the file's you're trying to play, and then try just playing a simple mp3 file..
and then head to Richer Sounds..and maybe, buy a new Amp/ Speakers/ Soundbar

Hi, thanks for the links. It seems like others are also having issues connecting the TV output to the soundbard input for sound, looking on AV forums. But your 2nd link might explain why mine specifically won't do it.
Getting a new soundbar isn't an option at this time, having just bought the TV. I'll try the optical audio and see how I get on before making a decision on next steps.
:-) Cheers

Optical is the easy option.
Whatever source the TV is showing, the sound passes through the TV and comes out of the soundbar.
HDMI uses all sorts of handshakes, file encoding and much voodoo to work
The days of stuff working just because they are connected with a cable have long gone, but this is progress, don't you know

I agree, optical from TV, everything through TV.
Just leave the sound bar on the optical input.
You should be able to send it through a 40D, I think I have one lying around somewhere, I will try later.
Probably have to set the output from ARC to PCM first though.
But optical out is far easier.
