We have a Samsung UE40 which has literally just switched itself off, with a pop and won't switch back on. Upon inspection I could smell smoke or some kind of burning-smell.

I've tried switching it back on but it won't switch on at all, no red light or anything. I've tested other appliances and its not the mains or even the plug.

Any ideas what part needs replacing before I take the back off the telly?

It’s probably the capacitors on the power supply board. You can buy repair kits or a new board.

A TV repair man once told me never buy a Samsung telly as they are almost designed to fail once the warranty period is up. Make of that what you will.

I've had about 3 and they've all lasted 10 years or more. In contrast, I bought a new LG OLED and it packed in within a month.

that's not wholly true, they do have well documented form for happily perpetrating a whole ridiculous charade of pretending you've crookedly purposely violated your product if it fails within the warranty period too.

Thanks for the response - This looks like soldering is required

I've swapped out the power board on my Toshiba TV before, part was about £25 on eBay. Quite a simple job really, I laid the TV on the bed removed the back cover (30 odd screws) then swapped the board. I think buying the capacitors is cheaper but requires some soldering skills which I do not have.

I was really surprised about the lack of components in the back of these TVs, I expected all sorts of boards and wires but there was very little in there.
