I've been looking at the following:

Samsung for £999 - https://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue75ru7100-2019-...

Sony for £1499 - https://www.johnlewis.com/sony-bravia-kd75xg8505-2...

Are these any good? They're a lot cheaper than others in the same size bracket so what's the catch? Anything else in that price rang I should be looking at?

I have the Sony. It is excellent. I’d recommend.

The catch will obviously be picture quality.

Things like brightness, HDR performance, how deep the blacks go, light bleed, blooming around bright objects and anti glare.

It all depends on your expectations really, they wont give you the best picture, but will be a huge upgrade over a 42" 1080p displat for example.

I'm not convinced the PQ will be much of a "catch". That's what the manufacturers have been brainwashing you into thinking.

There are not that many different panels at Samsung, for example. You'll just get an older image processor and a few less "features".

The big difference is between oled and LCD/led.

The Sony Android Smart TV OS is pretty crap and that should write it off if it's your main device.

We spent far too long looking at all the sets available these days and the Samsung sets won out quite easily. Bagged a 75 Q90R for a decent price through student beans and they're doing discounts again on the upper levels of QLED sets still.

I am just eyeballing this with a view to buy without consulting the Mrs! Forgiveness rather than permission will be sought!

Would appreciate thoughts if anyone knows anything about it. AV Forums seem to rate this quite highly.

Unless the size is a critical factor, personally I’d go slightly smaller and get an OLED if you want to stay in similar budget territory. Moving from LCD to OLED has been game changing for me (I moved from a 42” old
Samsung LCD to a 65” LG C8 OLED). Watching Dynasties II and Seven Worlds, 1 Planet on iPlayer when they launched in UHD was breathtaking, with amazing contrast and blacks.

This is very much IMHO though, and a 65” OLED may push you out of budget compared to a 75” LCD
