How to make Bluetooth speaker smart

I want to buy a JBL boombox type speaker for the patio but also want the convenience of streaming radio stations and Alexa. If I buy a basic Echo and connect it to the JBL will this work ok? I'm guessing so. Also will the Alexa need to be connected with a 3.5mm jack? I'm looking for the most uncomplicated way to make sure it always works so my wife won't be phoning me up saying nothing is connecting!

I meant a dot not an echo. Do the very first generations of dot have 3.5mm jacks?

I think the echo dot has a bluetooth skill so you don't need a physical connection, I seem to remember doing this to connect to by Ruark

At that sort of money worth looking at Sonos, something like the Move 2. I think all the new ones have Alexa built in, can wifi stream and direct bluetooth.

Is this a big improvement from using a phone or tablet playing through the bluetooth?

They are meant to be really good. What hifi rates then and seems to get good reviews.

I have a Sonos Move 2 on a base in our back room. Integrates with other Sonos easily, and then if we want to listen to something in the garden I grab it off the stand and use it as normal. Usually don't bother with bluetooth in or near the house, I just ask Alexa or use Airplay. Bluetooth if I'm down the bottom of the garden or have taken it away from home

Definitely not as 'robust' as a JBL, but absolutely fine for everyday use.

I wonder if the JBL would sound better? I have Sonos around the house and while I like it I do think they are over priced.
