Forged in Fire, History channel: Well worth watching
Discussion
Does any one else watch this show? Probably my favourite documentary on at the minute, four amateur blacksmiths are challenged to create a blade out of a blank of steel in the shows studio before they are judged and the best two go home to their own forges to recreate a well known type of edge weapon. Unusually for this type of show there is no false drama, no repeating what you've just seen after the ads and the judges aren't afraid to have joke at the participants expense. It's a bit like Bake off but with knives, the general vibe is quite unlike most programmes of it's ilk; well worth watching.
Your knife will kill....
I stumbled across this the last time us was in the US a couple of months ago- I really like it.
You are right about the lack of the usual American style highlights - I hadn't noticed this until you mentioned it but it makes sense as to why I like it.
I've even got the wife to watch a few episodes without complaining so it must be ok.

Yes, I too enjoy this show, haven't watched it for a few months but discovered my sky box has got a few episodes recorded that I haven't seen before.
They seem to have just moved J Neilsen off the judging panel and what was initially said a temporary move, is that now permanent? He had some surgery, apparently, but then I don't know how long exists between filming each episode.
I definitely like that it doesn't have "coming up after the break... a recap of what you just saw before the break followed by some more commercials" format.
I do enjoy it.
But equally, those who are competing are very often "That" type of person, who seem to need to have some wacky persona they have to live by. That can be irritating.

J does in fact re-appear. It's up to series four now and he is back in. Two points, a lot of Americans appear to know an awful lot about making sharp pointy things and Doug really enjoys his work does'nt he ... Not wishing to Spoil things but if you haven't seen the sharpness test on a ballistic dummy yet, it ain't for the squeamish.

Ah yes, he appears in the "Judges Champions" episode but then not again as far as I saw?Avid watcher here as well. (I live in the US so have much better access to it across platforms).
Also, if you like the content, check out Alec Steele on youtube.. a UK blacksmith with great quality videos, who posts stuff most days.

Ah yes, he appears in the "Judges Champions" episode but then not again as far as I saw?Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I've recently started watching this after a recommendation for a friend - and I love it. Currently being re-shown on History, and I've got in the habit of watching an episode each evening whilst my wife is in the bath.
It's basically the Bake Off, but for people making knifes. I've never tried blacksmithing - or even thought about it. But after watching this I found myself googling local courses... I'm terrible at DIY, crafts that sort of thing so I doubt I'll actually do one.

Yep, I agree. One of those things I'd love to have a go at, it brings out the caveman in me.
I especially like the way the contestants are allowed to go home and work in their own forges, suggesting it's less about the equipment and more about the skills. I saw one last week when they turned the furnaces off and the guys had to use hand bellows (looked like a big turbo) and coal.It got a bit smokey in there!.
Very enjoyable, easy and interesting viewing.

Been watching this for a while, and now we find watching anything filmed post covid unwatchable due to stupid mask/social rules we're back watching this more often....but...
Why have they stopped showing the blood and guts tests, the episode on last night clearly had the tests, as in the back ground you could see ballistic dummies with blood oozing out of them, but no footage of it in the show, sometimes you'll hear the judge refer to 'test 3' but you've only seen one previously. We especially miss hearing Doug Marcaida say "It will Keal!"

Depends on the time of day of the showing, I've found. If you catch a late night transmission then you may get the 'Kill Test', otherwise it will have been very clumsily edited out as you say.Why have they stopped showing the blood and guts tests, the episode on last night clearly had the tests, as in the back ground you could see ballistic dummies with blood oozing out of them, but no footage of it in the show, sometimes you'll hear the judge refer to 'test 3' but you've only seen one previously. In fairness, they were getting rather explicit and realistic, so I can sort of understand it.
My biggest gripe with Forged in Fire now is that they simply don't give the smiths enough time any more, resulting in rushed unfinished blades.
I realise that it's an 'against the clock' competition but the expectations are becoming unrealistic. Mind you, I guess they have to try to keep things fresh.
I did like the recent 'Beat the Judges' spin off show, and it was great to see Burt Foster back, even if he did look a little bit too 'quietly confident' bordering on smug. Mind you, he probably knew he had absolutely nothing to prove.
