Crapital Radio
Discussion
I work in a shared office. Radio is owned by one of the girls in the office, and for the last four weeks it's been set to Capital Radio - loudly.
This must be the very f
king worst radio station I've ever heard. The 'playlist' must consist of only 12 songs, as each one gets played every single f
king hour at the least.. over and over and over and over and over and over and over... the exact same s
t, and in between there's 'banter' from the most puerile of 'DJs', where every song is a 'classic' that people just keep asking for to played again.
"Next song up is Ed Sheeran, followed by another banging tune from blahblahblah featuring Ed Sheeran, then it's a classic from Stormzy featuring Ed Sheeran, then one you keep asking for, it's blahblahblah featuring Ed Sheeran and Stormzy somewhere in the f
king background... and you keep texting in to say how much you want to hear another classic bangin' (trite) piece of s
te even though we only played it TEN f
kING MUINUTES AGO!"
And the music is just f
king awful - I know, I know... music tastes are a very subjective thing, but I can't think why anyone would want to listen to the same old s
t hour after hour. I mean, even if they played the same ten or twelve rock songs on endless repeat I'd get bloody fed up with it pretty quickly.
I've taken to bringing headphones in and listening to Planet Rock/Scala to try and cut out the Crapital s
te, even though it looks a bit odd in the office. It's the only thing keeping me sane.
How the f
k does this station survive? I think it must be the most 'council' radio station ever.

Ask to change the channel. Failing that. Go full retard and throw the radio out of the window whilst having a full on strop. Then calmly sit down and act as if nothing happened.

It's got close to that, trust me!

1.5 million listeners a week? 1.5 fecking musical morons, if you ask me. Mind you, there's obviously one in an office of five here.
Does look like it's on a long downward trend from its heyday in 1999/2000, though - it's lost, oooh, some 28 million listeners since then!
I feel your pain, I was on a short term contract job once where the choice of office radio was Heart FM which has a playlist as you describe.
What makes it even worse is the "who is on Heart" competition where people have to identify two celebrity voices. Every day people will phone in and give the same f
king wrong answer that someone gave yesterday and 20times before that.

I had to endure Capital nonstop for 9 months in a shared dorm on my apprenticeship. I feel your pain.
One morning the subject of banter was ‘what makes you want to tear your eyes out?’
Of course I couldn’t resist texting in with the obvious answer....
The f
kers rang me up and put me on air!

Have you tried telling the girl she's a selfish t
t?
In all seriousness, it's a bit awkward - I'm new here, she's been here a long time. Office is three guys, two girls. Both girls actually like that radio station (so there's two musical morons out of five, in reality). The other two guys that have been here longer won't raise the issue (one of them also brings headphones in - the other guy just grimaces and tries to block it out mentally!) - probably because, apart from the music choice, the ladies are both really nice people.
t?How do you say to someone "your music is s
te and trite"? I often think of this...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrWGSWPplXo.
It's still s
t music though.
Office I work in is 50% Capital and 50% 6Music, two very different radio stations with the fans of their radio station hating the output of the other but the radio is split fairly during the day.
I find both terrible (daytime 6 music used to be good) so sit with headphones on listening to Apple Music or the evening/weekend 6Music shows on BBC Sounds.

For the most part radio is no longer a medium that is intended to be listened to for the whole day. The stations have worked out the listening patterns and realised the majority of people are tuning in for 20-50 minute slots and are tailoring the playlists around that.
They are all as bad as each other though and it has nothing to do with the target demographic - is it actually possible for Smooth Radio to go for longer than a couple of hours without playing "Working my Way Back to You" by the Detroit Spinners?

Absolute push the 'no repeat' angle. They go the whole work days without repeating a song.
I can't listen to the radio(any station) whilst office working. The music is ok but the chat puts me off composing emails/reading technical docs. It's odd because I can zone out office chatter with ease.

There's a station that my missus listens to, can't remember which one now but they proudly play music from the 80's, 90's and 00's yet still, with 30 years to choose from, it's the same bloody songs every day. ETA:
I'm not sure if it's still the same, but Radio X on a morning used to wind me up a bit. In theory it's the perfect station for me, I liked Moyles on R1, I like that genre of music - bang on. Unfortunately at the time I used to listen to them for 60-90mins each day they spent the whole time sarcastically talking down at "mainstream" radio stations (you know like the one that made you a millionaire) playing the stupid "we don't know what we're doing with all these buttons" act and then they would still play Stone Roses every other song, which made me get bored of a band I was previously quite fond of.

Feel your pain OP. Been working at my current place for just over 2 years. First 18 months were at a slightly shabby but ok office, then last summer we moved into a new shiny custom-built place, and the MD (who is in at most 2 times a week) said he wanted music on 24/7, as "its like a f
king morgue" otherwise. So part of the installation was speakers in the ceiling everywhere, including the kitchen/lunch room (but not his massive plush office, funnily enough).
Music has varied from a spotify playlist for a while, but otherwise radio - and the last month constantly Capital. At least 5 times a day is that f
king "Dance Monkey" song.
For 6 months ive been working with earphones in for 8 hours a day, and (weather dependant) spending my lunch break out walking for some peace and quiet. In every 1:1 with my boss ive raised it that its affecting my work. Ive had meetings with the company doctor, and twice asked HR whether one corner of the office can have the speakers switched off, so that people that want quiet to work can sit there (a flat no - that would break up our team if I sat on my own.... our "team" is just me and my boss, who I don't actually need to speak to more than once or twice a day).
It came to a head yesterday just before I went home - called into a meeting with my boss and the head of HR, told in no uncertain terms that the music is here to stay, they have tried to meet me halfway my moving the speaker above my head a few feet to the left (wow, thanks), and turned the overall volume down (they have locked the wall controls so no-one can turn it down more - only IT, from 200 miles away, can adjust the volume - and only with approval of HR).
I was told I can either put up with it, and start enjoying working there, or if i'd prefer, they can help me leave the company.
This is a company that constantly bombards us with "diversity" claims (but not diversity of working preferences it seems), and information about how it supports employees mental health (strange way of doing that).

Does she have a license to play the radio in your office?
I really think the OP needs to visit this post.
