1: Threads - the most depressing two hours you can spend watching TV.

2: When The Wind Blows - as above, but shorter.

3: Take Shelter - creppy prepping, worth a watch if you've never seen it.

Agree w/ On The Beach but I've not seen the film, just read the book.

Threads
On The Beach (apart from the endless singing of walzing bloody matilda)
The Road

Notable mentions: 28 Days Later, The Day After (American Threads), 12 Monkeys, Twilight Zone episodes 'Shelter Skelter' and 'Time Enough at Last'.

Hadn't heard of that one - I've put it on my list.

Another one that I remembered yesterday is "By Dawn's Early Light (1990)" - lone B-52 crew, isolated in their plane above N America wondering whether WWIII has kicked-off below them.

Yes, but being 'Hollywood', they manage to avert a fullscale nuclear exchange and though a good movie not quite an 'end of the world' movie per se.

Good watch though.

Another one, comedy kitsch rather than Armageddon: "Blast from the Past (1999)".

"When Worlds Collide" - scared the pants (short, of course) off me when I was about 8.

Cool spaceship too -

While since I've watched it & I'd forgotten that; the bit where they take out the Russkie MIG's is good (if unlikely)

It captures the (presumed) eeriness of being sat in a tooled-up tactical nuclear bomber quite well - if that's of interest The Figher Pilot podcast's worth a listen as they had a few excellent recent episode interviewing bomber pilots (B-1B & B-2) and a chap who's involved with the B-52. Edited to add that they also had a B-17 pilot on - also a recommended listen.

Could you include World War Z in there ? I remember the first 5 minutes of the film being action packed.

Hmm tricky...
In no particular order:

- Children of Men
- 28 Days Later

Two wild cards, in terms of unpopularity hehe
-The War of the Worlds (yep, the Tom Cruise version)
-Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Contagion is also an excellent watch and very timely. The virus is significantly more extreme but that aside the science appears to be spot on and there are an awful lot of parallels with the current global situation.
