I recorded this from Sony Movie Channel (Freeview) recently as it was getting a bit late, and settled down to watch it today. The end is missing; it stops after they resurface near Gibraltar. I can't find another showing in the programme guide to try again. It was over two hours so I'm fairly confident there wasn't a 'part 2' after some silly break for football.

I found one 'full length' version on YouTube and that is the same - no ending. But when I saw this years ago they got back to La Rochelle. Any ideas what happened?

I've had the director's cut on DVD for years; the 'correct' ending is on there: They make it back and then the u-boat is sunk by bombers IIRC? Been years since i watched it

I watched it a few nights ago, it was the original theatrical cut, so they do the La Rochelle finale. But I think there might have been one of those pointless a 5 minute Sony movie news interruption during it, so maybe that's when your recording stopped? I think when I saw it, it was on 9pm till 11:55.

Damn, that must be it. Funny how the one I found on YouTube stopped at exactly the same place.

Usually the Movie Channel seems to play the same film every day for weeks, but not this one frown

The definitive ending in my opinion. Brings home all of what the crew and captain are feeling throughout the film, especially when the captain is there watching everything unfold.

This film went through a period of mainstream love but the fact it only surfaces on the obscure channels means thats over.
Who cares what the enemy felt like. The fact they are shown on a wild night on the town before the deployment just makes you more annoyed at them.

?

It’s not about ‘the enemy’. It’s about a U-Boat crew.

There wouldn’t be much claustrophobia if the story pops up to a merchant seaman having a fag on the poop every 5 minutes!

There are some strange comments in this thread about a 1981 film. If I want politics, which I don't, I'd go to the relevant forum.

You seem to be an idiot and missing any type of empathy.

Das Boot is possibly the finest film showing the cat and mouse nature of submarine warfare, and the emotional and mental strain of a crew under pressure.
