I'm sure it's been done before, but hey.

Are there any films or TV series that you have been told are excellent, but that you just can't bear?

Not talking about mass market stuff that you are far too clever to like, I'm talking about critically acclaimed material. Not after a thread where everyone shows how refined they are by rubbishing Mrs Brown's Boys etc.

I'll start.

TV: Breaking Bad.
I admit I only got through the first series, but I'm informed if I didn't like that I wouldn't like the rest. I found everyone involved so unlikeable and the pace so glacial it was a struggle to get that far.

TV: Fawlty Towers
I was a big Monty Python fan growing up, and could never fathom why John Cleese left to do a fairly ordinary sitcom.

Film: Goodfellas
Meant to be amazing. I thought it was a low rent Godfather in which there was far, far to much dialogue. Most of the scenes involving the main characters seemed to involve them saying the same thing back and forth to each other repeatedly ('You going out? Yeah I'm going out! why you going out? I wanna go out' etc. ). By the end I was finding this utterly hilarious for the wrong reasons.

Film: Citizen Kane
Looks good but utterly emotionally involving. When the big reveal happens right at the end I was like "oh, ok".

Next...

If you don't like any of the first 3 of the 4 you have listed you are either hard to please or have extremely eclectic taste in TV / movies!
Breaking bad is one of the all time greatest TV shows, fawlty towers a triumph in British comedy and goodfellas is one of THE best gangster movies ever (all in my opinion).
Maybe you just have a short attention span and need to spend longer investing into the characters?

I would definitely recommend sticking with breaking bad, one of the best series I’ve watched, never heard anyone say they didn’t enjoy it.

It gets better and better too.

I started watching Breaking Bad, years after everyone else, when the then-new TV channel "Spike" started showing it from the start. I lost interest after about three episodes, maybe it would be worth another go. I suspect part of it was scheduling - I was recording it, maybe it was on at the same time as something else, or maybe it was erratic and didn't do series link and I just lost my place with it. Doubt it will be on again, and I'm probably not interested enough to pay for it.

Luther.

Over-acted preposterous tosh.
So bad that at first I thought it was a pastiche. But no, they're serious.

Chariots Of Fire. I liked the music but the film was just dull.

I think early seasons of breaking bad suffered from the writers strike, as they are very patchy and inconsistent. The series does get much better though and is worth battling theough series 1 & 2.

I can't watch Fawlty Towers, as its too cringeworthy. It's very funny, but I always find myself getting angry as Basil makes stupid mistake after stupid mistake. I hate watching other farces too for the same reason.

Goodfellas is the best Mafia movie of all time, none of that honour crap, its all about making as much money as possible without getting caught, even if that involves getting rid of friends who might become liabilities.

Luther is a good call. Complete crap.

Sons of Anarchy likewise; we lasted about 20 minutes and even that was a struggle. Garbage.

"The Office", one, not very funny, joke stretched out for two series!

Christopher Nolan films. I actually enjoy the first hour hour but then they just become a grind and full of plot holes, or events that just wouldn't happen. The thought of doing a 2nd watch on Interstellar or Inception or even Dunkirk seems like a tiring thought.

24 - Watched the about half the first series and then gave up. The whole realtime concept seemed to just result in a lot of boring padding to me.

I just can't watch that or the American version, just makes me cringe. Probably not helped as I am not a fan of Ricky Gervais.

The Office was awful. After watching it, I was left with the mental image of a group of media people meeting at the Groucho club & deciding to make a ‘comedy’ which sneered at and patronised ordinary people with their dull jobs and ordinary lives.

Star Wars. I will never understand why so many apparently intelligent people appear to take a series of third-rate kids movies seriously. It’s baffling.
