Music rights in Heartbeat
Discussion
Not many talk about Heartbeat which is now 10 years since it finished for good, but it did run out of steam I suppose. Good to see though that they did finally release them on DVD, albeit they seem to be quite expensive for each series (the ones I've seen on ebay), and I saw one complete series 1-18 boxset for sale on ebay for a ridiculous 900 quid lol. What???. Just a pity alot if of the original songs that were used in the original broadcasts, particularly Beatles but not solely Beatles songs have been redubbed/covered with other songs. It dosen't detract from watching them but in some some cases it does, and in some instances it alternative song doesn't suit the scene well. One song in particular which suited a scene well IMO was in a series 5 episode where they originally used "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan. From what I've seen this song on some versions (though I'm not sure if this is with the DVD release) has been changed for a completely different song, which just dosen't suit the scene it's used in. An upload of this episode I found on Dailymotion has this particular song changed, but it appears this has been recorded from a TV channel, whether a UK one or not I'm not sure. An upload I found on youtube they have muted the sound during the scene where the song is used (and this appears to have come from the DVD release), which makes me wonder the original song was used for the DVD release, but either the uploader or youtube have muted the audio so that the video dosen't get removed. So this means that the TV channels are also changing the songs also. I thought the rights issue was only for home video?.
The music begins at about the 16:26 mark

Watch the scene with "Like a Rolling Stone" added and it suits the scene perfectly and compare that awful song they used and notice it lacks any emotion to the scene. I've noticed in the past ITV3 have changed certain songs from what was originally used as I have almost every original broadcast of HB on tape so I have a rough idea of what song was played. Couldn't imagine what it would be like if they changed "Nights in White Satin" during the foot and mouth episode in the second series.
The best advice if you want to see these shows the way they were original shown is to have original recordings of them.

Off topic, but I've watched Heartbeat being filmed a couple of times, in the middle of a freezing cold February, once at Goathland (Aidensfield) and once at Whitby. It was a eye opener.
They took about two hours to film a thirty second scene of a car coming into Scripp's garage to be filled with petrol by David.
The actors stood around shivering.....hardly glamourous at all.

It is repeated lunchtimes on ITV2 but they never show the early ones, they started in series 8 the Nick Berry ones never get repeated must be some reason.
I think it's ITV3 (or 4, one of those two) that they repeat it on. Yes it's very strange they never air those earlier, older eps with Nick Berry in them, and even the ones when Greengrass was still in it (up to Nov 2000) they never show those either. It seems anything from Sgt Craddock, PC Mason, PC Merton, Vernon, Bernie era Heartbeat they show. I don't think the reasons or due to music rights as they could just redub or use covers, but I do often think they don't want to have anything to do with those older episodes maybe because quite a few of those eps storylines are quite controversial with drugs references, foot and mouth, badger hunting, mental illness, alcohol issues etc which would never get shown in the later series - far too disturbing for the cosy sunday pipe and slippers audience with their rose tinted specs on. Heartbeat gradually became watered down but was still believable and relatable throughout most of the Nick era until it went really stupid. David Stockwell was a believable character with "learning difficulties" when he appeared in series 3 caring for an injured badger whilst looking after his sick mother, then when he became a regular character they turned him into a stereotyped village idiot and the comedy factor went overboard. We was lucky to catch them filming on three separate occasions, the first was in June 1996 when they were filming at the police house in Askwith outside Otley. Nick Berry arrived along with Kazia Pelka who played Maggie, plus Anne Stallybrass who played Kate's aunt Eileen, Nick's mum (a Barbara Windsor clone whom I thought was a wrong choice for the role as she was nothing like Nick), and a character named Erroll Brown who Nick knew from London. Although it was June it was quite a cold afternoon with a chilly wind. We watched them set up the equipment from the house opposite, took them ages to get the camera set up for a couple of scenes that where filmed, Nick's mum arriving to greet Eileen, Nick directs his London friend to Aidensfield (in reality about 50 miles away in Goathland), and a scene at the rear of the house with Nick talking to Maggie in her Landrover which lasts on screen for about 10 seconds. They even went to the trouble of placing a bird box on the wall to hide an alarm even though it probably wouldn't have been seen in the shot. We were there all afternoon for a couple of scenes that lasted only about a minute altogether. We could never catch them filming as it was pot luck knowing when they were going to be in the area, it was only the landlord of the pub that had a rough idea when they were going to be filming. They took about two hours to film a thirty second scene of a car coming into Scripp's garage to be filled with petrol by David.

The second was in 2008 outside the Goathland Hotel filming a scene where Gina pulls her pram down the steps. The girl who played in Corrie was also there who was working at Scripps garage. A quite chilly late afternoon in May. The third time (I think 2008 or 09) they were filming a short scene at Scripps' garage where two young lads arrive in their Triumph TR4. Luckily on that occasion it was a very warm morning.
I've noticed quite a few of the past characters rarely get mentioned. One of them is George Ward Gina's uncle. He appeared in the show right from the beginning and I thought he was a great character. Even though I watched HB thoughout the 90s I had always assuned that the actor that played him left the show because of either ill health or he died shortly after, but apparently he appeared in two more dramas in 2000 and 2001 but died in 2003 at the age of 58. I always thought he died about 99/2000. No idea why he left the show, whether he left to start afresh or that he was written out or his character died or left Aidensfield, but it's strange noone mentions him. Another character that was quite a regular in the early series was Mostyn who originally owned the petrol station that Bernie Scripps took over. I remember an episode in the late 90s when Bernie recalled how he has owned the funeral place/petrol station for years, yet there's no mention of Mostyn (Mostyn's last appearance was in the badger dig episode from series 3I think). It's like the producers decided to ditch the original owner of the place and hope viewers wouldn't remember. For fans of the show it's been only Scripps' garage as far as they remember.
Here's a couple of screenshots from filming of a series 6 ep in June 1996:

If you catch an older Top gear on Dave, you'll also hear different music to that used on the original screening. The 'A-Team' theme for example - that they used when modifying cars (or pretending to) is replaced with an 'A-Team type' track.
It's all to do with the limitations on the music licence that's purchased restricting its use either by time or the channel it appears on.

Quite a few shows like that from way back when. Back in my younger years i used to watch Roswell and that was blocked from being released on DVD for some time due to the music rights / artists involved so they ended up re-recording various tracks & using different tracks to eventually get it cleared for a DVD release. It's all to do with the limitations on the music licence that's purchased restricting its use either by time or the channel it appears on.
Another one i can think of, that ended up being blocked from DVD releases and still has restrictions with episodes on streaming / syndication services, is Cold Case. When that first aired they obviously used period correct music to tie in with the eras in which the case was based, but when all the rights over artists & music usage changed it made it impossible to clear the show as it would have cost mad sums of money due to some of the artists / labels / music involved on some episodes.

I think season 11 onwards is widescreen rather than the old 4:3 format. I suppose that is seen as undesirable these days. DoctorX said:
Whenever I hear "Nights in White Satin" I always think of that episode where the farmer with Foot and Mouth on his farm killed himself. Very moving and a beautifully judged selection of music, even though it had nothing to do with the issue in hand.
It's funny the things you remember - I think of this too!Jukebag said:

My friend's Dad co-wrote the theme song.
It must be one of the only shows that the original artist was still singing the theme song to the end but had left a long time before.Broadcast TV has a music usage license that's far more liberal than DVD release. 20 years ago when a lot of old series were being released on DVD for the first time a flatmate of mines job was working for the beeb researching the music used as it needed identifying for licensing and nobody bothered keeping records, identifying both the track and the rights holder could be quite an obstacle. When she met my mate Ben - a freelance editor who when given the freedom especially enjoyed slipping in rare and unreleased tracks from his favourite alternative artists - they had quite an "interesting" conversation
