Jurassic Park on ITV
Discussion
I caught abit of the original Jurassic park on ITV over Christmas but I noticed after Nedry gets killed by the Dilophosaurus, as the camera zooms into the cannister he drops and mud pours over it there's a fade to black and a fade from black between that scene and the next scene where Alan Grant is washing his face in the cascade of water. As I've seen the film hundreds of times on VHS and DVD I know there is not supposed to a fade to between these scenes, it's just a straight forward cut between shots. Anyone know ITV have put this in?. I noticed they've done this before when it's been shown previously.
ITV have been showing the various Jurassic films on ITV1 & 2 for what must be at least a decade now on syndication and it's always been edited / censored in some form dependent on when it's shown. Here's a similar Reddit thread from about 5 years ago - https://www.reddit.com/r/britishproblems/comments/...
Most of the time they're now always shown well pre watershed, sometimes early / mid afternoon, so it's fairly likely they're going to show a fairly censored for daytime tv version, to clear the censors, minimise complaints, etc. Same applies to the Harry Potter, Bond, etc, franchises whenever they get repeated over & over - guaranteed cuts.

So did they actually cut anything out? There's nothing particularly graphic in the shot anyway. Dinosaur spits on Nedry, missis and hits his chest, which Nedry grabs then a second shot gets him in the face and the camera pans to the outside and down to the canister. There's no gore at all it's just implied.
The discovery of Ray's demise is more gory and did give me the creeps as a kid.

No the fade out effect had nothing to do with cuts to any violence. This fade out/in happens after Nedry has been offed in his jeep and the camera pans down to the flowing water to the cannister he dropped that's being buried in mud, and then for some odd reason there's this strange fade out as if you were expecting there to be an ad break, but there isn't one the scene fades back in to the water that Grant is washing his muddy face in (not cuts between scenes just this weird fade out effect that was never in the original/official version).
Forgot to mention that when I last saw JP on ITV i remember they did the same thing between the scene after Nedry meets the Dodgson character with the canister at the diner table and the following scene where they are flying in the copter to the island with Grant, Hammond, Ellie, etc. There's probably other times during the film where this has been done. Again there were no cuts just this strange fading out and in between scenes. The theatrical version wasn't like this nor is the VHS and DVD, although I haven't seen the Bluray version but I suspect it's like the theatrical version. It's like they added it to make the two scenes transition better for some reason.

Is there some branding on the canister that they may be hiding?
It was a Barbasol can and they've done promotional things with them in recent years, so there is no obvious reason I'm aware of for it to be removed.Very strange, can't find any info at all on different versions, which is odd for a film as loved as JP. Amazingly the only thing that turned up was a 2013 thread here when the exact same issue was raised!
I do know that airplane/TV edits are often poorly managed with little regard for the artistic vision, so it could be as simple as some poor editing to smooth it out for ads on TV or something like that.

I once watched "2001" on TV in the States and they slotted in a 5 minute ad break at the famous cut from Moon-watcher throwing the bone in the air --> space-station Shuttle.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
