People that turn the TV on for no reason

We have a TV in work.
Usually, if I have command of the remote I will turn it off. (I hate TV).
Recently an episode of Eastenders was occurring; I turned the TV off.
A Colleague stood up, grabbed the remote. Turned the TV back on then sat back down and resumed his crossword.
Why??
Maybe that exchange had nothing to do with the TV. Perhaps if you'd sought consensus before turning it off the outcome may have been different.Usually, if I have command of the remote I will turn it off. (I hate TV).

My mate (lazy b
d) has the TV on from the moment he gets up to the moment he goes to sleep. Even leaves it on when he goes out. Sky news is his preferred channel, unless there is sport on. Most of the time he is not really watching, he's on his laptop, on facebook.
My TV rarely goes on until 7pm ish, much prefer to listen to the radio.

In what way? I don't follow.Your colleague's thought process may well have been "How did he know whether I was listening to that or not? Who does he think he is turning it off without asking?"
If you ordinarily appear a little confrontational, or inconsiderate of others, your colleague may well have been communicating a message to you. That being "Be more considerate of those around you".
Alternatively, your action may have been perceived as aggression and your colleague was signalling to you that he is prepared to stand up to you.
The fact that the situation occurred in the first place and that you have come onto Pistonheads seeking guidance suggests that you may not be very good with people. There may be reasons for that which are somewhat out of your control, for example where you sit on the autistic spectrum. On the other hand you may just be an arse.
Background radio, podcasts or You Tube (mostly audio) while I'm working is normal for me. I don't mind voices or music in the background except if I have to concentrate or am under pressure when I will turn everything off.
I don't physically turn any TV on until I've finished work - normally between 6 to 7pm.

That's not all that different then, you prefer to listen to the radio and he would rather listen to the TV.

We tend to have music on in the background most of the time so very similar, rarely watch TV though.
At a previous employer we had a TV in the kitchen, usually on BBC news 24, I can see the point of leaving it on a news channel as it's lots of short bits and a particular key word might attract your attention to a particular story. Leaving it on a soap opera you're not watching seems a bit odd though.
The one that bugs me is pubs/clubs with TV's showing music videos, but with the sound turned off and different music playing.

I have Sky News on in the background in my living room. Only glancing up at it when my favourite female presenters appear.

LOL, I have it on in the morning, in the background whilst having my breakfast and browsing on my tablet, I always look up when the weather is on:Edited by LeadFarmer on Saturday 23 January 08:56
