The series of books upon which the 2003 Master and Commander movie is based is some of the best historical fiction ever written, in my opinión.
The 2003 movie is my favourite film by a long way. Not sure how I feel about a new film, on the one hand looking forward to it, on the other fearful that they will f
k it up. I understand the new film will be based on the first book in the series, which is a fine tale and based on true events. Please, please, please don’t f
k it up.
Some good analysis of the original movie here:

Master & Commander is an amazing film. One of the best historical movies ever made and, as far as I am aware, the best ever set on a sailing ship of that era.
But, and it is a big but, they should have been making sequels 15 years ago, not now. All of the key cast are too old now.
Just thinking about all the dire Pirates of the Caribbean sequels that were made (first one was good fun) and then thinking about how this was neglected just leaves me shaking my head at both Hollywood and general film audiences.

I'm a huge fan of the books and after 10 years since, I'm working my way back through them again, fortunately I've forgotten a lot of the events so I'm really really enjoying then again, they are fantastic.
I also think they did an excellent job of the movie and my brother's, myself and my dad all really wanted a sequel but to no avail. I am holding out hope for the new movie but it will be difficult to replace the cast from the original, whenever I read the books i picture them as per the movie.
To be honest I think to do the books justice they really need someone like Amazon with a huge budget to make a series rather than a movie.

The ship used in the original movie is moored at the Maritime Museum in San Diego: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Surprise_(replic...

Been hoping for this since the original. Fingers crossed but a bit concerned about the messaging on aiming at a younger audience. Not sure I want to see it become Patrick O'Brian 's version of Pirates.
YesFirst one was so good precisely because it was aimed at older audiences. From memory there was a much higher number of middle age men in the audience in the cinema.

Amazing film. Regrettably, there is a 99.2% chance that the sequel will be a load of nonsense. This is a very reliable figure, based on every sequel ever made.
I'm still going to hold out hope given that it's a prequel, and based around the first book, so could more easily be seen as a reset... Ayahuasca said:

A great film, and I'll certainly look forward to any further films on the subject. That was a good summary, too - thanks. I also like this one (this guy has done some quality reviews - Waterloo and Zulu are brilliant, and Braveheart is especially funny!)...The series of books upon which the 2003 Master and Commander movie is based is some of the best historical fiction ever written, in my opinión.

I like the original film so if it matches that, I'd be happy. I wonder will they have the stomach to make the Americans "the baddies". They chickened out in the original.
If it is based on the first book 'Master and Commander' the enemy will be Spanish. The soundtrack of the original movie was sublime - pieces by Bach, Boccherini, Mozart, Corelli, Vaughan Williams complement the visuals and add much to the enjoyment of the film. I hope these use similar in the new one.
AFAIK, the first book (and many subsequent books), were inspired by Lord Thomas Cochrane, a real character:

And the Sophie, Aubrey's first command, is based on Cochrane's tiny 14 gun brig Speedy, which took on, and captured the 32 gun Spanish Xebec frigate Gamo.

Indeed, I give you joy of your observations. In the book the actual Gamo became the fictitious 'Cacafuego' (poo-fire). The original Cacafuego was in fact captured by Francis Drake a few generations before Lucky Jack.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU-kFUJoJEU

How happy I am to read that!I actually developed a scale model kit of Speedy, complete with Cochrane figure, after reading about him, and it's quite popular! I may also do the 'Horrible Old Leopard' at some point, as I have started designs for her sister, Bristol.
