Does anybody happen to know why exactly the Google movies offering is so dreadful?
In terms of selection, it seems half reasonable but in terms of everything else, it’s dismal.
My whole life is in Google and therefore it makes sense that I would put my digital TV and movie collection there as well so, at this point, I want to give them my money and, as I’m ‘into’ movies, probably a fair bit of it.
However, the choice of 4K content I can almost count on my fingers, it’s very hit and miss with everything else whether it has 5.1 or not, and worst of all they are still offering SD versions and charging a ‘premium’ for HD.
I can’t imagine anybody wants the SD version of anything these days so I can’t see the point of even offering this. Even just a cursory glance in the Apple store shows you the majority of titles have a 4K offering so why such a poor showing from Google?
Regarding soundtrack, 5.1 should be the minimum and they should really be pushing atmos. The likes of Netflix have had atmos for some considerable time now.
Yes, I know that if I want uncompressed video and audio then I should buy the disc and for some of my all time favourites, I have done just that. However, I want my life to be discless and I don’t want to have to run a XB1 just for a 4K BD drive. I’ve got a plex server now actually for all my uncompressed disc images, stored on a NAS.
My guess is that it’s some stupid licencing restrictions that Google either doesn’t have at all or has with some limitations. Licencing isn’t there for the benefit of the consumer anyway, but I really would have thought that a tech titan such as Google would have done a considerably better job of the digital TV and movie space than this!
