Seeing 9/11 inside the presidents war room
Discussion
Very sobering , even after 20 years , one of those “where were you when Kennedy was shot" moments . I was working in Taunton , started by listening on the radio , then in the hotel , transfixed by the TV reports .
President Bush had to deal with something never before even contemplated ,and was at first overwhelmed and struggling to make sense of what had happened . The whole event was played out live across the media , so there was nowhere to hide by limiting what the public saw .
The decisions he made almost on the spur of the moment that day had far reaching consequences , later to be picked over by experts in hindsight , interesting to hear him say he does not regret one of them.
Glad in a way very little video of the actual planes crashing into the towers , and the collapse , the horrific pictures of people jumping to their death , those would have been very hurtful to relatives .
I visited “Ground Zero “ about 7 years ago and whilst not believing in ghosts or having any religious leanings , I can honestly say there is an electric atmosphere which weighs heavily down on you and it is impossible , not to walk away unaffected .

likewise... around 7 years ago toodidn't think it would affect me too much tbh,.. I'm glad I was wearing my sunglasses! Even now, as I type this, the thought of seeing the flowers on the names makes me well'up
Watched this myself, I recall the shots of Bush at the school and not seeming too fussed by what was unfolding and also when they went to the bunker.
This however gave a much greater insight to those events and more on that day and I can see why Bush continued at the school now, and his constant requests to get back to DC etc.
No one was prepared for anything like this previously and the way he and the team handled it given the pressure and misinformation was very impressive, even when the pilot of AF1 wanted guards on the doors just in case there was a terrorist on the plane.

Fascinating to watch. Bush was the wrong side of hot-headed Yank for me but he went up in my estimation based on this. The context of the school photos was interesting, I won't have been the only one dumbfounded at what was seemingly at the time I reaction of ambivalence.
Pretty chilling really to hear Dick talk about giving the green light to shoot down U-93.

It was impressive, not to react based on emotion or anger & be able & willing to accept the advice of those around him.
The secret service guys having to say no to the President. Chaney & Bush having to take the decision to authorize to shooting down of flight 93.
You can see it still troubles those involved.

About an hour into this - fantastic program.
Watching any sort of doc on 9/11 just refreshes the memory on the whole thing.
The live footage of the plane hitting the 2nd tower, footage of them both coming down.
But despite all the programs & all the footage - each time a new one on there is new footage that i've not seen before.
Great to get proper first hand accounts - some horrifying, scary, and some amusing first hand testimonies in there.

I concur with what seems to be the consensus on here - Bush has rocketed up in my estimation, especially his reading the crowd at Ground Zero and responding appropriately, a much sharper mind than I'd hitherto credited him with.
A very well made program (unusually these days as the BBC seems to want to reach the lowest common denominator as fast as possible).

have kept such footage to a minimum, heartened to hear Bush comes out of it well, I felt
he was unfairly lambasted at the time, made out to be a bozo , a light weight.
I shall watch it on I player.
