Keaveney's last show just finished on a bit of an odd note. "When I was told I wouldn't be doing this show any more". Very surprised to hear what sounded like him confirming he was pushed. Good to see Craig Charles around, but I half expected Keaveney to pop up at Virgin after a bit of late summer sunny gardening leave.
Also, Radcliffe & Maconie: Reduced hours again, having been shifted to weekends from weekdays, looks a bit like the worst salesman in the team having their territory constantly reduced & not cottoning on to the inevitable.

Thoughts?

Good weekend all, CF

Not overly sad he’s leaving enjoyed him on the breakfast slot but I think his time had come to go.

Radmac are still the best presenters on 6. Would have liked Tom Ravenscroft or the Hawk to get a decent slot.

Getting a bit fed up of Huey ‘ here’s something from the playlist’ Morgan although the tunes are still, decent.

Agreed, he's the most "Wright-ey" (no g) of the line up. Voices, effects, samples etc, so maybe that's what an afternoon show is supposed to be. Yes, Radmac just brilliant.

That was a emotional last 10 minutes of the show, great speech at the end if you missed it and drops the bomb saying he was asked to leave!
I think the breakfast show suited him better, not sure what his audience figures were like in the afternoon?
I will miss him, my favourite radio since Mark & Lard in the afternoons on Radio 1.

Really? I've heard Radcliffe telling Maconie firmly, 'can I have a word?' as they go off air, after being shouted down for the nth time. Just listen to the number of times Maconie shouts over the top of him and does everything he can to stop him from talking.

Sounds a nightmare to work alongside, tbh. Radcliff's got the patience of a saint but I can see him shooting his co-presenter live on air one day. Hope I'm listening when that happens shoot

weird, I'd have said the opposite!

I listen on catchup and have just finished yesterday’s show so I’ve still got his final one left.

I did read somewhere that the aim is to move a lot of 6 Music up to Salford and he wasn’t willing to leave London. Could have been nonsense.

I’ve actually only recently got into Keaveny due to just getting DAB available at work sometimes. Only really started once he announced he was leaving but have listened to all his shows on BBC Sounds since and have really enjoyed them. Typical.

Used to love Huey’s show but since he started prerecording it at the beginning of covid it isn’t the same. Seems he’s being made to play more playlist stuff that he doesn’t like and he’s losing interest in it. Heard him say on his 6 Music show “if you’ve enjoyed the show then check out my other show on Radio 2, it’s like this one, but better, frankly”.

I wonder if he’ll be the next to leave.

Sad to see Keaveny go but I love Craig Charles too so it’s not too bad.

Gutted he’s gone and was surprised to hear him say it was not his choice.
The combination of decent music and general silliness was a winner for me whether in the AM or PM so I look forward to whatever project he embarks on next , I know there are a few things either available or upcoming too.

I love r6 with Huey Morgan, as well as Rad n Mac, but i would love to hear Rick Wakeman on there. He used to do an evening slot on Planet Rock 20plus years ago and was hilarious, him and another guy used to tell ace stories, but i can’t remember who he was on with.
Keaveney just became a less shouty Chris Moyles and i hated him… shouting doesn’t make you funny.

I was wondering if this would be discussed on PH.

I'm also sorry to see SK go.

My take on it is that the powers that be at 6Music are trying to do a Radio 1 when they realigned the station at a different audience. Personally I can't stand the music the new presenters play but 6Music is supposed to be slightly edgy and alternative so they have to bring in new DJs to stop it getting too stale.

I was listening to Absolute the other day and Keaveney has a new show starting there. It sounds like late night show with storys as much as music.

I don’t normally listen to Keaveney as I just want music, not attempted humour. I tend to listen to Gideon Coes show from the night before. I listened today and I thought the show went out with a bit of a whimper, to be honest. When RadMac had their last weekday show it seemed like a party with lots of guests and it may have even ran over into the next show. The recent changes at 6music have made me realise how much I value my Apple Music and Spotify accounts.

6 Music does seem to be heading a bit more dancey, and I could understand if they’d got rid of Keaveny for some younger blood, but replacing him with Craig Charles doesn’t line up with that way of thinking.

Also liked him as a presenter. He’s setup a podcast, so let’s see where that goes.

Weirdly this morning they were still advertising Shaun Keaveney's show during the 'what shows are coming next' bit after the early breakfast show.

Always enjoyed SK's show but thought it was far better suited to the morning slot. He did seem to be "phoning it in" of late however - too much reliance on MASOs, small claims court and the soundwall. The interviews with Cox were always a highlight though.

Fantastic to have CC in. I've always enjoyed his funk and soul show and he's been excellent when standing in for Steve Lamaq (and "Wrighty" on R2). A very entertaining talented broadcaster. I especially liked that he converted his trunk of funk feature to punk asking for listeners' suggestions.

6Music was my kind of thing when I first heard it 15 years ago.

Increasingly, it is not my thing.

I do like Radcliffe & Maconie, Gideon Coe, Huey & Crag Charles. Cerys and Amy Lamé's Sunday shows can/could be quite good.

Mary Anne Hobbs' show is often not my thing. I didn't like Keaveney's afternoon show. I like Lauren and her show can be ok, when not too dance/urban.

What I hear of Radio 2 is bilge.

I agree with most of what you've written. Most R6 prime time shows attempt to have a range of different new music and musical styles, but I've noticed a creeping increase in dance music tracks being played during certain day time shows. An occasional dance track is bearable, but I can no longer listen to Mary Anne Hobbs because her voice is (a) deeply annoying (does she have the worst voice on national radio?) and (b) she plays too many dance tracks. 20 minutes of repetitive beats is not my idea of interesting music.

I concur, Radio 2 is mostly bilge, seemingly only playing music from the written-by-numbers end of the pop charts.

I like Craig C, but he would have been better suited to taking over Lamacq and leaving Keaveny alone. I agree that he was better suited to the breakfast slot though. Mary Anne Hobbs should have been a much higher priority for finding something else for her to do.

RadMac's hour later start is a good thing, but finishing at the same time? Why? It's still my favourite show on 6M.
