The Lancaster Bomber at 80 With David Jason
Discussion
It was actually decent for C5. Not the usual hyperbole and it was only voiced by David Jason.
They covered the evolution from the Manchester pretty well and they also covered the concept of "precision bombing" i.e. b
ks. They also covered Harris' obsession with are bombing. It also put the bombing of Germany into context, that it didn't break the population and it didn't impact on production as much as they hoped. There was reasonable explanation of the bomber streams (Gee and OBOE) and pathfinders although some of the more technical stuff such as H2 radar was omitted.
In recent years there have been a multitude of programes about the Dambusters, so it was nice to have a Lancaster programme which docussed other aspects of its usage. I only caught the tail end of the programme, so missed the bit about the Manchester.
Was any mention made of the long bomb bay being the result of torpedo carrying in the Manchester spec, and did the high crew losses from the small and awkward escale hatch, in comparison to the Halifax anyway get highlighted?
