Name your best Western
Discussion
After a comment in the "Films I Watched" thread I thought I'd ask the PH masses to nominate their best "cowboy film"/Western
There are a lot to choose from from but I do suspect that you'll be hard pressed to find many better than "Once Upon A Time In The West". I'm not saying it's my best but it has to be in with a shout (probably so does Blazing Saddles for being so subversive).

Tombstone is great, with Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday stealing the show for me… “Say when”.
Kurt Russell is really good too. Ending drags on a tiny bit too long though, always thought they should’ve clipped a few minutes off it.
Otherwise can’t go wrong with Clint Eastwood. Any of his will do me but I’ll plump for Pale Rider.

Ulzanas Raid
Burt Lancaster is the old Indian Scout chasing a renegade Apache war party.
Remember the rules, Lieutenant. The first one to make a mistake gets to buryin' some people.
Lieutenant, a horse apple dries out at a certain rate. This one's pretty solid. Ke-Ni-Tay figures four, maybe five hours. ( ahead ).
Classic western, all the usual prejudices and thought to be Robert Aldrich's statement reflecting the Vietnam conflict.
The Long Riders. A film about the James gang with well know acting brothers playing all the families. Stacy and James Keach as Frank and Jesse James. David, Keith and Robert Carradine as the Younger Brothers. Dennis and Randy Quaid as Ed and Clell Miller. Chrisopher and Nicholas Guest as Charlie and Bob Ford. Also has a great score from Ry Cooder in it.

Aha - Ulzana's Raid, written by a chap from Greenock - Alan Sharp -he also wrote another western called Billy Two Hats - my dad knew him quite well when they were young as they both served their apprenticeship together in shipyardsBurt Lancaster is the old Indian Scout chasing a renegade Apache war party.

His most famous screenplay though, especially in UK, was probably Rob Roy - not exactly a western
Must admit if I turn the telly over and A Fistful of Dollars is on, I just have to carry on watching it even though I probably know it line by line now, I've seen it so many times.
Clint is so cool, the look and the music is fantastic and Ramon is one of my favourite film psychos.
So yeah, that'll be my favourite.
"That ain't nice you laughin'. My mule gets the funny idea you're laughin' at him".

I love a Western. They're usually pretty formulaic but that's the appeal for me. Good versus evil. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance. Not one, but two heroes. A superb villain with 2 strutting sidekicks - Lee van Cleef and Strother Martin. Pretty girl, drunken doctor, ja a Svedish shopkeeper, Shakespeare-quoting newspaper editor. It's got it all, including a great twist which never bores me.
Also anything which includes Walter Brennan as a hornery old-timer called Stumpy.
