Lucky! The Bernie Ecclestone documentary
Discussion
Anyone else watching/watched this on Discovery+?
Done by the same guy who did Senna and it’s absolutely fantastic. 8 parts and the only talking head is Bernie himself. Rest is all historic footage from his own collection. The story of Bernie but also of F1 itself.
Like him or loath him, if you like F1 (especially the golden era) it’s absolutely bloody wonderful.

I did the week trial for Discovery+ to watch it then cancelled at the end as there's nothing else on there that interests me.
Really enjoyed Lucky! though. Some terrific archive footage and whatever you think about Bernie he has had one hell of a life. I came to it also after listening to the Collecting Cars episode.
The Jackie Stewart documentary currently on Sky/NowTV is also worth a watch.

I thought it might be a "how good am I" talk to camera but was pleasantly surprised and loved it. The archive filming was great and showed the "advancement" of the F1 cars especailly the steering wheel complexity.
Plus it shows the politics of F1 has a long history of power battles and under the table negotiations just like today!

The adverts are annoying, Virgin Airways 3 times, back to back, twice in the programme.
OMG Same! I actually used to like that advert but now it makes me want to yank my eyeballs out! Three in a row is like some kind of bizarre mental torture
It is a very well presented series and some nice touches using animation. I got the feeling the quid pro quo was Bernie granting full access to him and his film in return for no tricky questions.
A case of a 92 year old man making sure he set up his legacy on his terms.
Interesting to see that the in memory of in the credits had several names but no Max.
On the Collecting Cars podcast they speculated that Bernie agreed because he wanted to leave something for his young children so that they heard his story in his own words.
When I was watching, that was exactly how it felt - like he was talking to the viewer like we’re someone he’s fond of and he wanted to ‘be himself’, or at least the person they’d recognise.
As I say, tremendous stuff. Can’t wait to see what they do next.
