Sad news coming through tonight of the passing of Dickie Davies... cry

https://www.express.co.uk/sport/othersport/1736789...

For those of you around my vintage, he was the face of Saturday afternoon sport via "World Of Sport" for many years (17 years in fact from 1968 to 1985). Met him once at an audition for his short lived sports quiz "SportsMasters" and he was the friendliest of genial hosts too.

94 years young.

RIP Dickie.

Sad news indeed. Many happy memories of Saturday afternoons and also of him hosting ITV's snooker coverage back in the 80s.

I remember him for his section of grey hair on an otherwise dark head of hair. I think that and his moustache were his trademark!

He was the presenter of sport in my youth. In the days when we had to constantly adjust the horizontal and vertical holds on the tele to get a steady picture....! R.I.P Dickie Davies.

Never met Dickie, but I did get to meet his wife when she came to my school. She was the producer of Blockbusters and they were doing the casting rounds.

Such sad news, he was able to make any sport seem interesting.

The current WRC commentators could learn a thing or two from Dickie. He knew how to make the coverage of rallying exciting.

Go to the 'Rally VHS' channel on Youtube, and watch any of the 70's and 80's videos to see what I mean

he was interviewed a few years back by Chris Evans on Virgin Radio, and he did admit that rallying was one of his favourite sports to cover. However I am fairly certain the script was written by Barrie Hinchcliffe. Dickie Davies just did the voice over. Jim Rosenthal did the commentary a few times as well on the same basis.

For those of us of a certain age living in South Wales or SW England “Dickie Davies - commentator” conjures up a different person.

The other Dickie hailed from Haverfordwest and ran a tyre business there. He was resident commentator at Llandow and Castle Combe circuits. As a spotty youth I would sometimes “assist” him with lap charts. He would also park his DB6 on the bank above the Pontypool hill climb course and commentate from his driving seat.

I believe he is still with us. However fond memories of the ITV Dickie so RIP.

As a bike courier in the 80s I delivered to his house on the Thames at Chiswick.

He had all his shirts out, freshly ironed. Not sure why that's my memory of him smile

Sad news but a good innings though.

I'm 60 now and can't imagine carrying on for another 34 years. Another lifetime really.

Sad news indeed frown

Heard on the radio this morning that using "Dickie" was an idea by Jimmy Hill.

Yeah, World of Sport, and wasn't there something similar on the other side ?

Would be some weird stuff chucked in there, would be like the 2.40 from Kempton, Curling from Toronto, then Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks, followed by us going live to Wimbledon for Bus racing, really lived up to its name that program.

Ice, turf, obese middle aged men waddling about, public transport, all in one program.

RIP Dickie !
