I assume you're talking about the new Chris Pine film? If so I have to say I am stupidly excited & looking forward to it, in fact it's fair to say I can't remember a film I was looking forward to more for quite some time.
It's been well marketed, imo, and I hope that this will wash away the stench of the Wayans efforts from 20years sgo....

well I really enjoyed it - had a smile on my face all the way through, there are more Easter-eggs than you can shake a stick at and it's a far less grim world than Westeros (not difficult for sure).
The above bring said I'm curious as to how it'll play with non-D&D fans/players - the saving grace in that respect is a broad stripe of comedy/comedic moments running through it... it draws the non-cognisanti in and lets them enjoy while we're geeking out about displacer-beasts/gelatinous-cubes/the Sword Coast/whatever. The female magic-user is, IMO, poor - virtually a cardboard cliche protagonist and by far the worst thing about the film. Some of the SFX are staggering
I would have preferred to see a, maybe, more 'traditional' party make-up but the whole 'getting the party organised' was reasonably well handled imo. There'll doubtless be accusations of 'wokeness' from the usual idiots or similar from the other side but, in all honesty, I didn't feel preached at - it was just gosh-darned *enjoyable*

The plot was suitably convoluted (like all good D&D campaigns), with some great scenes, and all the D&D tropes you'd expect. Not a classic film by any means, but a decent enjoyable effort that D&D fans will like and more importantly won't put-off anybody new to the D&D universe. There is no huge backstory needed, and plenty of content for fanboys.
Personal facourite parts - Hugh Grant channelling Boris Johnson, and the fat dragon
