Just watched the final. Chap wins with 28 points, hooray, head in hands, phew - then I realised there was no clapping. There was no audience. His teammates didn't clap either (until he stood up to get the bowl). Bowl was presented by the host - no fanfare, no clapping, basically just 'Well done, here's the bowl'.

It seemed a very sterile anticlimax - why no audience? Is part of the BBC on strike?

Was it filmed back when there were Covid restrictions?

Mastermind seems the sort of show that doesn't need an audience to work.

(I suspect some shows like 'Pointless' that used to have audiences now just play taped applause and laughs etc)

It seemed just like like it, but doubt the BBC would wait two years to broadcast it...

They still have the daft screens up on university challenge and only connect don't they? Wouldn't surprise me if they filmed without an audience.

We watched that last night and were puzzled that at least twice Clive said "Ive started so I will finish" we looked at each other and said that was too late the buzzer had gone before he started.

I thought the same thing. It didn't make any difference to the outcome in the end but there were definitely a couple of points that the contestants got which they shouldn't have.

I was struck by the needless length of the questions such that Clive had to gabble through them. Often you can get the answer 1/3 of the way through but they have to sit there waiting for the question to finish. A buzzer like UC would be better IMHO.

I presume they must time test the questions to ensure the contestants get the same amount of question time?

the guy that won was very fast with his answers
(it was only after watching the 60 years of UC that i realised there was a buzzer and a bell for the teams)
