Michael Sheen says a Welsh character should only be played by a Welsh person.

So taking this argument to its logical conclusion, if there was a play about Mrs Miggins from 53 Trellis Avenue, Rhyl, the only person qualified to play them would be Mrs Miggins from 53 Trellis Avenue, Rhyl.
Does that not put all actors out of business? Discuss.

ks about acting surprise.Ask the t
t what he was up to playing Brian Clough.I've been watching a few of these videos online about the M-she-U imploding etc.
The bigger problem for 'actors' is that their time is up.
Not in a 'no one will ever watch movies again' way, just that many people are now balancing out their viewing with none superstar stuff too.
They can moan and groan all they like, all that's happening is the audience is getting more and more disillusioned with it all.
I'm more excited about a new upload from Martin Zero or Mustie1 than I have been about anything from Hollywood over the last few years.
And as for homegrown stuff, Inside No 9 is all I've watched domestically.
I sit on youtube all evening and occasionally watch something old on Prime which I keep only for the shipping!
Binned Netflix off last year and would the TV license too if it wasn't for Mrs D
They sound like Luddites finding reasons why a steam powered loom is a bad idea!
Keep cotton making in the kitchen!!
Idiots!

Imgine having to prove your superpower before being cast as Superman, Spiderman, Captain America, Hulk etc
I like science fiction set in space on spaceships, Mars or the Moon, there aren't enough astronauts to play those parts. Where would the people come from to act in The Expanse, hell they spaced more people that we have had astronauts.

I watched all the seasons of The Americans over the past few weeks.
The main male lead is a KGB agent that's been in America since he was young and married to a female KGB agent with two teen American apple pie kids.
He's American and in some episodes says a few sentences in Russian.
I was gobsmacked to find out that he's proper Welsh, boyo!
And the American secretary is from Sunderland.
That's what I call acting.
Anyway, Michael Sheen played Chris Tarrant didn't he and Chris is certainly not Welsh.
And he played a robot in Passengers. Can only robots play cyborgs now?

Ever since he grew that beard he seems to have turned into a proper luvvie mouthpiece prick. Seems to think he’s a lot more important than he actually is, finds it frustrating and so just talks a load of crap to fill the void.
Used to like him, but he just seems to be really irritating these days. Caught a bit of that thing he did with David Tennant and I threw a brick at my telly.
This is a great example of a headline writer using a quote without context and others reading that headline, forming an opinion on it without actually reading the story.
Here's what he said:
"You know, seeing people playing Welsh characters who are not Welsh, I find, it’s very hard for me to accept that. Not particularly on a point of principle, but just knowing that that’s not the case".
The context was in relation to his observations about non-disabled actors playing disabled people and that it's difficult to draw from your own experiences to play the part.... and that there are many very good disabled actors available.
I understand what he means. He's not calling for any change but simply highlighting that as actors, your real life often provides the basis from which to draw inspiration for the character being played. Michael Caine has said the easiest role he's played was Harry Brown because the life Harry led was the lives he saw and experienced growing up in South London.
Whenever I see a British actor play the part of an American in America, I rarely find the portrayal convincing, regardless of the quality of accent. (Christian Bale and Gary Oldman perhaps being the two exceptions but both have lived there longer than they did in the UK and are probably more American than British).

I like Michael Sheen, and I'm Welsh, but he's talking nonsense.
There was a movement a few years ago to stop Hollywood White Washing history, taking real stories and casting white actors to play roles based on non-white people, I get that, it's wrong.
But then of course the bandwagon starts "Straight actors shouldn't play gay characters" "CIS actors shouldn't play trans characters" etc etc and you start to wonder if 'they' the people who seem to have a problem with everything these days really understand what acting is, there's a very real skill and talent in using empathy to convincingly portray someone else, who you don’t share the same experiences with.
It’s what separates the great actors, which Sheen is, and the ‘stars’ like say Tom Cruise who usually only play “Tom Cruise as a fighter pilot” or “Tom Cruise as a spy” “Tom Cruise as a Bar Man” etc
It's a disaspointing statement from him.

That only works if you know the origins of the actor. If he didn't know the actor was not Welsh im sure it would not bother him so its a kind of pointless opinion. Here's what he said:

There have been actors that were so convincing that it wasn't until after filming stopped that they revieled their real accent and costars were stunned.

I don’t think we are far off from seeing an AI generated Tom Cruise on the screen.
Scan his face in, ask him to do a number of different expressions - then get some Herbert off the street to move around like Tom would and morph the 2 together.
Bit of work on the voice and its goodbye luvvie-dom.

Haven't they already done that with a couple of characters in Star Wars. Difficult to avoid the uncanny valley. Scan his face in, ask him to do a number of different expressions - then get some Herbert off the street to move around like Tom would and morph the 2 together.

Erik Rhodes once said that people meeting him for the first time were frequently surprised to find he wasn't Italian - as he had played so many Italians over the years. (He was actually from Oklahoma.)
Well hat's acing, innit? Look at all the different characters and accents Ronnie Barker and David Jason have been able to play. And I wonder how many people realise that Jodie Comer is a Scouser in real life?
