Anyone see this? As a person with next to no knowledge of the armed forces I found it pretty interesting. The fellas "behind bars" did strike me as just about impossible to deal with but perhaps everyone like that is waiting for that magic person to find a way of pointing them in the right direction.

https://www.channel5.com/show/court-martial-soldie...

Also found the other people interesting, the main fella that was in charge of them at the ground level, the officer and just a few moments of an absolutely first rate "left-right-left-right!" Sergeant Major type.

Will be interesting to see if the inmates in the next two episodes seem as impossible to deal with as the ones on the first programme.

Some of them were potentially salvageable fkups, but the two who were 100% going out the door were exactly the same sort of thick, poor impulse control types that prisons are full of.

Zero surprise if they were both in trouble/court/prison very very shortly after getting out.

The way that system is set up isn't really meant to deal with too many of the absolute dregs, most of them were at least likely to try to be compliant & try to jump through the hoops.

Back in the late 80s a good friend of mine’s Father was the senior officer over in Colchester. He are along to talk to us about an army career and had some fascinating stories about day to day goings on. Now they have the Parachute Regiment based there and 2 Para has usually been filled with utter nutters. Military prison is so different than civilian prison and often civilian prisons could learn a great deal from the military ones. Good TV however.

It used to be the case that a soldier who went to Colly and stayed in, would usually turn out to be a fantastic soldier due to the training that they do while serving their time. Once they have completed any promotion bans they would often catch up and pass any of their peers who hadn't been punished

Seen something similar in the past, I think most of the episodes are on YouTube

I enjoyed that series when it came out.

I seem to recall the final episode ended with some stats like " in civilian prisons, 70% re offend, in military prisons, it's 12%" (or something similar).

I forgot this was on. Enjoyable watch last week, although like mentioned previously you know exactly how it’s going to end for a couple of them.
I’ll have a look for the Too Gun one as well, ta.

A bit more positive stuff this week. Also included someone with a tough background - but I guess all careers have some people with tough backgrounds.

I wish they'd update. Would love to know how the kid got on. He really did lack self confidence, and given his early years it's not surprising. I do hope he settled.

Some sad stuff and some good stuff this week. The guy that went on the run for 17 years was some story; very sad that he was about to be deported without seeing this teenage daughter though. But good that they did well in the pace stick marching though and I loved the drill sergeant's cap which must have acted as a very good sunshade. Perhaps some sort of mirror arrangement might have helped forward vision though?

Wasn't that sad.

He'd made a lot of bad decisions and thoroughly fked up his life for years over almost nothing. Would've been easier to do something to get booted out 17 years ago instead of spending years hiding waiting to get caught. Back then they probably wouldn't have bothered deporting him either.

Doesn't sound like there was much of a relationship with his daughter for him to be missing out on. That seemed long gone.

Hate to think what it'd be like being dumped back in South Africa with nothing, that'd be a fun experience.

I thought it was just me thinking along those lines. He was selfish. At no point has he put his child first, he’s blindly carried on living half a life and hiding, and by consequence depriving her of a proper father, for the sake of finishing something he committed to. This could have been done and dusted ten years ago and him living a normal civvie life in the UK.
I find it hard to muster much sympathy for him at all.

I dont disagree with either of you that much. I didn't like him at all. I just wondered why someone would go on the run for 17 years and simply thought the whole thing was a shame for him and his daughter. Of course, who knows what she thinks of it all?
She might not be bothered at all.
